Britain paid the repair bill for its ransacked Embassy in Iran (embassy to reopen tomorrow)

Britain has paid the full cost of repairing the damage inflicted by an Iranian mob on the UK Embassy without receiving a penny from Tehran, the Foreign Office has confirmed.

Although Britain is still demanding compensation for the sacking of the embassy, the premises in Tehran will formally reopen on Sunday – and normal service will resume at Iran’s Embassy in London – without any money being contributed for repairs.

The British Embassy and a separate residential compound in Tehran were looted by pro-regime demonstrators in November 2011. The crowd, which included members of the Basij militia, set the embassy’s main office building on fire, stole the possessions of diplomats and vandalised portraits from the Government Art Collection.

At the time, William Hague, then Foreign Secretary, held the Iranian regime fully responsible. “The idea that the Iranian authorities could not have protected our embassy - or that this assault could not have taken place without some degree of regime consent - is fanciful,” he said.

The Vienna Convention obliges national governments to safeguard all diplomatic premises. Yet the bill for making the British Embassy fit to be reopened has been covered by the Foreign Office. Philip Hammond, the Foreign Secretary, will preside over an opening ceremony in Tehran on Sunday.

A spokesman declined to say exactly how much money had been spent, but placed the figure in the “low hundreds of thousands”. The Foreign Office stressed that negotiations over compensation were still happening. “The UK is in discussion with Iran about compensation for the damage caused to our embassy compounds in November 2011,” added the spokesman.

But the Government chose not to insist on compensation before Britain restored full diplomatic relations with Iran. Instead, the Foreign Office cleaned up after the intruders, hoping to be reimbursed in the future.

Anyone remember that the Iranians once used their Embassy as a sniper hide to shoot a Brit policewoman in the HEAD?

20 years ago, now.

More..?

Well, so let’s talk about the French! [Little irony and sarcasm there.]

I hate to see what's happening to England.

Like the Shire in LOTR, without the happy ending.

I do find being lectured by Americans on being soft on Iran and sarcy comments about embassies in Iran a bit ironic.
