MUSIC FOR WATER WALLERIN’

You don’t really need subtitles for this one. It’s about blond, blue-eyed, manly Aryan heroes defeating shifty, swarthy villains of a faintly Latin character in a manly manner.

The poem is by Johann Mayrhofer, a German poet of the first rank. Jack worked in the Imperial Censor’s Office and had a secret life that he had to live with the greatest discretion: he was homosexual. His poems are full of classical Greek topics with some manly Aryan stuff thrown in. Daddy Schubert had no problem with Jack and Frannie rooming together because of the censorship thing, and he had no idea that Jack was thinking of his younger roommate in a – (cough cough) – somewhat different way.

Schubert: “The Boatman,” D. 536

Frannie was rooming with Jack Mayrhofer when he set a lot of Jack‘s poems to music. This one has a Shakespearean tint, something that Jack had a gift for, but rarely expressed. Old Jack had that whole Greek bisexual thing down pat, and he preferred writing about that.

This poem contains one of my favorite German lines: “The earth is surpassingly fair, but it is not safe!” No English subtitles, unfortunately, so just roll with it.

Schubert: “How Ulfru Fishes,” D. 525

Frannie Schubert was in remission from syphilis when he wrote the amazing songs and chamber works of his last few years. This Leitner setting is hypnotic, the reverie of a man sitting in the bottom of a boat, looking at the sky. You get the feeling that the meeting with the beautiful woman is a dream, and not really happening at all. Schubert saves the A minor to A Major modulation for the end of each verse.

Leitner’s meter of tiny fragments is impossible to set to music, so Frannie sets them as prose in long flowing lines to get around the problem. Only the great ones can get away with that.

Schubert: “The Fisherman’s Luck in Love,” D. 933
