Trent Lister, 29, bought his investment property in Norlane, Geelong with his partner and his mother, but what started as a long-term life plan has descended into a nightmare.
Earlier this month, during a routine inspection of the property, Mr Lister arrived to find his property had been turned into a cannabis crop house by new tenants who had only been in the property for a few months.
The home was left trashed, the electricity had been rewired, holes cut in floors and the roof, and cupboards removed.
The bath was being used to send water to different parts of the house and the occupants had even turned the doors around to make more space in the bedrooms.
The damage bill is estimated in the thousands and Mr Lister said he was facing bankruptcy after insurance complications.
His mother, who is a foster carer looking after four children, is now also in financial strife.
"When that door opened, my heart just sank," he said.
"You wouldn't believe it unless you saw it. It's amazing how sophisticated these people are at what they do because they're probably going to get away with it."
Those responsible vanished, and while Mr Lister is hopeful they will be caught, he is not holding his breath.
"[Police] don't think they'll catch them," he said.
Officers took DNA from the house and are running checks to see if they have any matches in the system.

When you violate The Creator God's moral law in so egregious a fashion don't be shocked when lawbreakers violate you.

I’m so old, I remember when “partner” meant someone you were in a committed business relationship with, not somebody you were in a sexual relationship with, without any commitment.

When I first saw “partner” I thought “business partner”. When I saw that his mother was involved I knew the guy was a poofter.
And when he ran a background check they had good credit and great employer references .....
D’ oh!
This is in Australia........... “partner” could really mean business partner, and in some cultures, people still take care of their elderly parents and they don’t have to be gay to love their mothers.

One has several triplexes...
All of these tenants are gone now but the story remains (bought the triplex with these renters):
Tennant 1 was an exotic dancer. Always paid on time with cash.
Tennant 2 was a drug dealer. Always paid on time with cash.
Tennant 3 was a school principal. Always paid late and was abusive. Sometimes the checks would bounce.

Could be a women, some reporters are militant in using the term. Spouse, wife and husband do not exist in their vocabulary.
I must be as old as you. I remember back when someone said "crack", we all reached down to pull up our pants.
Yeah, I couldn’t figure that out either. I had to read it as if I were reading something a nine year old had written.
Nobody pulls their pants up anymore.
