Republican Presidential Candidate Ben Carson Stumps in Harlem

Republican presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson brought his message of self-reliance to the neighborhood on Wednesday during a campaign lunch with local business and religious leaders at Sylvia's.

“What has happened traditionally, particularly since the 60’s, is you’ve got certain people saying, ‘There, there you poor little thing, you can’t take care of yourself, we are going to take care of you,’” he told reporters before sitting down for the meal, which was closed to the press. “And we got people who believe that they can't survive on their own, which is absolutely ridiculous.”

The GOP hopeful, who was one of the ten presidential wannabes in last week’s national debate on Fox News, said the government should focus more on providing vocational and educational training that invests in people than in traditional social programs.

“I think it’s important for people to understand that there are two ways to handle this,” he said. “One way is what's been going on since the 60’s where supposedly the war on poverty, we've spend 19 trillion plus and we got more poverty, we’ve got more people on welfare.”

Carson went on to say, “We need to look at the things that do work. What has worked is when people invest in other people with mentoring programs with various types of job programs and training programs.”

Harlem residents were intrigued by the Republican candidate’s visit.

“I like him, he’s a good brother,” long-time resident Edward Brown said. “I liked what he had to say on the debate, he spoke very well.”

Brown saw presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama visit Harlem but he has never seen a Republican candidate in the neighborhood. He said Carson’s visit sends a strong message.

“Look at Trump,” he said. “He don’t come up here, all of his businesses are downtown.”

Other residents said converting black Democrats to the Republican party is a tall order.

“I think it’s a hard sell,” said James Johnston-Lynch, 50, who was eating at Sylvia’s during the visit.

Johnston-Lynch, a Democrat, has seen previous black Republicans as vain attempt by the GOP to appeal to black voters. Carson, however, seems different, he said.

“I feel he is a genuine candidate,” he said. “He is not like the other one — Herman Cain — I couldn’t get behind that guy.”

He also actually cited this famous Johnson quote:

Harlem's not that bad these days. I take the Metro North through there most every day. Sometimes, I get off at 125th Street and get something to eat. They have some good restaurants there.

If I knew Ben Carson was there, I would have gone up there to say hello during lunch.

No worries. I relocated to New York City last year for my job. I had the same preconceptions going in there. I figured there would be a lot of bad areas to stay away from. Coming from Boston, I was pleasantly surprised. The people in NYC are way friendlier than in Boston and nobody hassles you. People of all races seem to get along fine with each other. Excellent food and plenty to do in the city.

Even out in the boroughs, like parts of Queens, Brooklyn and Bronx, neighborhoods are gentrifying quickly and filling up with young working people who are making the city better. I'm really glad I came down here.

Ben was on Cavuto today. Excellent interview exposing Margaret Bangor. Told he and his wife were visiting inner cities and passing the message

At the end of the interview he confessed to having a friendly relationship with Trump. Used a paraphrase of just another friend in area instead of neighborhood
He said Trump was one of the kindest, most considerate, generous people he had known. He was not at all like the public persona
(Did some research they have both been involved with St Jude building Children hospitals and supplying top quality equipment etc. Also both close to Thomas family)

Wow!!! I’ve wondered if anyone would ever be able to get that quote out there...I’m thrilled to see this! You are a good man, Ben Carson.

This is great. I was hoping that Cruz would dedicate an address to minorities. But I'm happy to see Ben do it.

Cruz/Carson wouldn't be a bad ticket.

In fairness, he used “n-word” rather than the actual word, but I was pleased as punch as well!

I absolutely agree. But he must never befriend the thugs who’ve replaced the Duke Ellingtons and the Count Basies of yesteryear. An abrupt and clean break must be made between black leaders and the thuggish element so rife among black youth today. Obama courts those scum bags. Even Colin Powell, who should know better, acted like a damned homey when he met with such scum. Carson is a success because he had a strong willed mother who wouldn’t compromise with such filth. I support Carson and his message but he simply can’t buy into the culture that’s destroying an entire generation of black youth. Obama could’ve have used his bully pulpit to deliver such a message. Sure he said a brother needs to pull up his pants but that’s the extent of it. He allowed human scum and vermin into the White House. It’s the culture! Personally, I’d never hire someone who copied the clothing and attitudes of a culture who make millions by misogyny. And whites and Hispanics also buy into that paradigm. Don’t give me that Democrat line that they’re merely a reflection of reality. Nonsense, they’re creating their own reality. Does anyone actually think you could have an intelligent dialogue with the guy featured in a previous post (see below)? I doubt it. Perhaps it wouldn’t be so bad if Tyron Harris was an isolated case, but he isn’t. He’s the norm.

Ben Carson is a real asset and a very good person.

We could do far worse.
