What is the biggest catch you ever made in your life? For one Florida deputy, it was no fish, but rather a floating bundle of carefully-wrapped cocaine worth an estimated $12 million. According to Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell, an off-duty detective with his office was fishing 20 miles offshore last week when he happened upon 50 pounds of uncut cocaine.

” Is is it really worth $12 mil”
Could be. Article says “uncut.” Step on it 3 or 4 times, divide it up into small envelopes? Maybe at street level.

I’m just imagining myself, a clean civilian, getting close enough to shore to dial Coast Guard or police to report my ‘catch of the day!’ On one hand I imagine I’d get quick response, on the other, I’d better have everything tricky-wink!

Yep. For an outsider $12 million in cocaine is probably worth a shallow grave.

$12 Mil for this haul is over $500/gram
About right if you consider it getting cut to 10%. Most “cocaine” bought by consumers is only about 5%

50 lbs times 453 grams per lb=22650 grams. uncut, that would have to sell for $530.00 a gram to get to 12,000,000 dollars.
If it is pure, by the time the stuff hits the street, it has likely been cut three or more more times (assuming 1:1 per cut), so a street value on the order of $12,000,000 isn't outrageous (now eight times as many grams).

Is is it really worth $12 mil Does coke sell for $15,000 an ounce? That is what it works out to.
Even if you step on it twice that is about $4,000 an ounce.
Seems like a high estimate to me.

I wouldn't even call. Just throw it overboard and move along.

Way back in the 70s -80s the tee shirts in S. Fla pronounced..
Save The Bales.
Referring to marijuana bales that dotted the waters around Fla and the Keys.
That was during the ‘lighter ‘side of drug running. Got waaay more vicious with cocaine.

If you were to call the CG find another reason to get them to come alongside then tell them what you've got. Other people might be scanning the radio frequencies.

I’m guessing a few people might not be happy.
“So Frankie - you know that shipment came up 50 pounds short!?”
“I don’t know nothing about it boss - it might of just washed overboard in those big waves I was telling you about!”
“Oh yeah - $12 million bucks just happened to jump overboard!” Bang. Bang-bang.

All depends where you sell it. In Alaska or Hawaii it could go that high. In El Paso or San Diego? Not even close.
