Tyler Drumheller, CIA officer who exposed U.S. reliance on discredited Iraq source ‘Curveball,’

Tyler S. Drumheller, a high-level CIA officer who publicly battled agency leaders over one of the most outlandish claims in the U.S. case for war with Iraq, died Aug. 2 at a hospital in Fairfax County. He was 63.

The cause was complications from pancreatic cancer, said his wife, Linda Drumheller.

Mr. Drumheller held posts in Africa and Europe over a 26-year career during which the CIA’s focus shifted from the Cold War to terrorist threats. He rose to prominent positions at CIA headquarters, serving as chief of the European division at a time when the agency was abducting al-Qaeda suspects on the continent and U.S. allies there faced a wave of terrorist plots.

But he was best known publicly for his role in exposing the extent to which a key part of the administration’s case for war with Iraq had been built on the claims of an Iraqi defector and serial fabricator with the fitting code name “Curveball.”

In contrast to Hollywood’s depiction of spies as impossibly elegant and acrobatic, Mr. Drumheller was a bulky, rumpled figure who often seemed oblivious to the tufts of dog hair on his clothes.

It’s not like we have so many honest men around that we can afford to lose them. Mr Drumheller was one of the few who declined to go along with the lies agreed upon by so many others. I don’t expect George Tenet to be at his funeral, much less Powell or Rice or Cheney, Rumsfeld, or Bush. RIP, an honest man.

How do you know Drumheller was honest? He had his opinions, and others in the CIA had theirs, but you’re very quick to claim Drumheller’s opinions were correct. Leaders have to make difficult decisions during their tenure, knowing full well that the Monday morning quarterbacks among us will criticize their decisions as soon as they’re made. I don’t envy those leaders at all, but I do admire their fortitude.

It doesn't matter. The WMD claim was only one of nearly 2 dozen reasons to go to war with Sadaam's Iraq post-911.

People are quick to forget the continued atrocities, the violations of the no-fly zone and the total disregard to the 17 UN resolutions after the Gulf War.

Sadaam did not exactly cooperate with the west regarding his stockpiles of chemical weapons, including 400 tons of weapons grade uranium that was moved out of Iraq during the war by US troops (as written about by the NY Times)

Another important reason to go to war in Iraq was to create stable governments on both sides of Iran. Afghanistan to the east and Iraq to the west, with friendly governments, would allow the US to have bases and airfields close to Iran. It would have been the ultimate nuclear deterrent.....which was the reason Iran was rushing to get the technology before the US could finish getting its chess pieces in position.

Bush let Obama know this plan during the transition and Obama has done everything to reverse it and give Iran all the time it needs to finish its weapons program.

Drumheller was saying one dozens of reasons was based on faulty intelligence (that the rest of the world backed). The overwhelming majority of the remaining reasons were valid enough for anyone with reason.

ping to a link to an article you posted- Drumheller’s dead...

snip:”
Tyler Drumheller, a former CIA officer, was identified as an author of some of the memos Blumenthal forwarded in reports by Politico and Bloomberg.

Reading from a prepared statement to reporters minutes later, Blumenthal said he “testified about sending some reports written by a respected former high ranking CIA official I thought might be informative to the secretary for her to use or not as she saw fit.”

He declined to answer questions about the person’s identity.

Blumenthal’s attorney, James Cole, also did not answer a question about whether Drumheller authored any of the memos.

The new revelations come after Blumenthal last week handed over nearly 60 previously undisclosed emails between himself and Clinton to the congressional panel. “/snip

I know of the type of men like the late Mr. Drumheller.

They are not the flash and dash, but the kind that could whip your butt while playing chess in a nice quiet well lived in abode.

These folks have an amazing itinerary of places and peoples past, yet do their jobs in silence and with solemnity of purpose, meanwhile guarding their secrets learned, with their lives.

He shall be missed. ‘Ave’!’

sent Hillary a lot of bad intel on Libya...Tenet has memos that seem to indicate that he didn't refute curveball at the time

Well said. What evidence do we have, other than Drumheller was upheld as truth according to those we oppose?
The WMD claim is reported as a lie, yet we have clear evidence of precursors, accelerants, dual use materials and delivery systems. You cannot have a reasoned argument about the ‘lie’ without those facts.

Looks like Tyler had loose lips and so did whoever it was who leaked to him...

From Trey Gowdy's letter to Elijah Cummings- mentionof Tyler Drumheller's apparent leak to Blumenthal of leak to Tyler of a CIA asset's name :

"In addition to Sidney Blumenthal’s business interests, Secretary Clinton also apparently received classified information from Blumenthal—information she should have known was classified at the time she received it. In one email, Blumenthal writes “Tyler spoke to a colleague currently at CIA, who told him the agency had been dependent for intelligence from [redacted due to sources and methods].”48 This information, the name of a human source, is some of the most protected information in our intelligence community, the release of which could jeopardize not only national security but also human lives. Armed with that information, Secretary Clinton forwarded the email to a colleague—debunking her claim that she never sent any classified information from her private email address.”

Hmmmm... 2003 abduction of Imam Hassan Mustafa Osama Nasr in Milan

This case the left went after the CIA and as a result the American agents involved were tried in absentia, one sentenced to 9 yrs for grabbing this dirt bag. This was done to try to shut down the US renditions program, as was all the hooplah over "torture." It's not the "torture" the leftists were really upset about it was the renditions... these muslim terror groups have always been intertwined with radical leftwing ones [Sandinistas with Palestinian hijackers for example] so they are scared.

Makes you wonder who gave up the identities of CIA assets in Italy in snit fit over renditions?
