Venezuelan supermarkets are increasingly being targeted by looters as swollen lines and prolonged food shortages spark frustration in the OPEC nation struggling with an economic crisis.

Shoppers routinely spend hours in lines to buy consumer staples ranging from corn flour to laundry soap, turning lines into venues for shoving matches and now more frequent attempts to plunder shops.

This is why our cities don’t have supermarkets; this would happen every day. As it is, blacks from neighboring Newark NJ are constantly being arrested at the Wal-Mart in my town (which thankfully was built out in the meadowlands, away from any residential area).

You can judge the economic health of a country by the quality of its toilet paper (or the lack thereof).

The idea is to have just enough foodstuffs and staples so that people get what they need, but spend many hours in line to get it. That keeps them occupied and prevents them from causing mischief. But once they can’t get basic needs, even after standing in line all day, all bets are off.
