Explosions shock congregants at 2 New Mexico churches

LAS CRUCES, N.M. — A pair of small explosions just 20 minutes and a few miles apart shocked congregants Sunday morning at two churches in southern New Mexico.

There were no injuries or deaths from the blasts outside Calvary Baptist and Holy Cross Roman Catholic in Las Cruces, Las Cruces police spokesman Danny Trujillo said. Each building sustained minor damage.

Authorities are working to determine who planted the explosives, what materials were used and whether the blasts were related.

"It doesn't appear to be coincidental because of the timing, but you never know," Trujillo told The Associated Press.

Several agencies including the FBI, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and New Mexico State Police are assisting with the investigation.

The first explosive device went off at about 8:20 a.m. in a mailbox on a wall near the administrative entrance to Calvary Baptist. According to police, several worshippers were inside the church at the time, but services hadn't started.

According to churchgoers, the blast shook the building and there was debris around the damaged mailbox. Las Cruces police Sgt. Robert Gutierrez described seeing "just a lot of paper shreds."

The next blast came from a trash can outside Holy Cross Catholic at about 8:40 a.m. as Monsignor John Anderson was helping pass Communion.

I stand corrected. Calvary Church in Las Cruces (The Cross) is a Baptist church!

Would be interesting what public stances these churches have taken on issues.

As I just said in the other thread on this topic:
........................
Since the explosions were small and no one was hurt, until something else develops, and since it is in Las Cruces I’m going to classify this as just a Really Stupid Teen Prank.

That said...
The supposed ISIS training camp / infiltration center in Mexico is supposed to be not far south of Las Cruces, and if so, then these could have been training runs for future serious attacks.

“Is this national news over two cherry bombs and two cigarettes?”

At two separate churches on a Sunday, yes, I’d say it’s national news worthy, but I doubt the MSM thinks so. But if is was a sparkler, or a package of snakes, on the sidewalk outside of a building that used to be an office of the NAACP 20 years ago, in the middle of the night, then it would be all we’d hear about for the next 36 hours.

Where did this Nation's backbone go? When we were young, my tribe would set eight to ten of these on Friday and Saturday nights. It never even made the local news. Sensationalism and jellied backbones is one of the driving characters of this ridiculous society.

Our pastor has his head in the sand on security issues. He doesn't even want to lock the doors when we all go in for the preaching service. However, I am one of the ushers who takes up the morning offering and when I and one other man take the funds out and place them in the safe, I lock all the outside doors. They have the push-bar's so that you can exit out in event of emergency, but you cannot enter. This is normally after the service has started good and no late arrivals are coming in.

Several times I have suggested that we lock the doors and that we have some type of security. But, he blows it off. But that is okay. The man that goes out with me with the offering, and I, are both armed!!! He has his weapon in his coat and I have mine in a black bag that I have my Bible, notebook, Sunday School book and pens in. It has a zippered outside pocket and that is where I trusty Glock 40 cal with hollow points with extra mag is located. I am not going to be a sitting target for these types regardless of what my pastor has to say. I have recently had a conversation with our head deacon who is my Sunday School teacher also, and he is bringing it up with the deacons that some who are able to be armed be so. So I think it is coming, whether the pastor likes it or not. Anyway, I and the other usher are armed.

My fear is what LegendHasIt says above... What if it’s ISIS?

They killed a lot of Christians on Sunday mornings in Baghdad with huge car bombs just as church was letting out.

Be on the lookout for strange cars (of people who are not parishioners) in front of the church or in the parking lot.

They would also beat the bushes for the perpetrators for years.
