Analyst: Ky. Governor's Race May be Bellwether for Dems in 2016

While Democrats may be hoping to improve their numbers in Congress in the next election, political analyst Nathan Gonzales says that the Kentucky governor's race may be a bellwether election for 2016.

Since losing the Senate in 2014, as well as even more seats in the House, the Democrats have been looking to 2016 with hope in light of the fact that they typically have better voter turnout during presidential election cycles, Gonzales explained in a blogpost for Roll Call.

However, he contends that there is at least one race that is expected this fall that "could dampen some of the Democratic enthusiasm next year" — that is the Kentucky race for governor.

Democratic state Attorney General Jack Conway has been expected to win the gubernatorial election in the Bluegrass State against businessman Matt Bevin, but Bevin is starting to show a slight advantage in the polls, Gonzales writes.

The Democrats have held the governor's seat every term in the last 43 years except for one, and term limited Gov. Steven Beshear is still considered popular in the state.

Why would Kentucky elect a democrat? Seems it is past time to purge all the democrats.

Clearly this author knows NOTHING about KY politics.
She is doing some heavy duty “wishful thinking” here.

KY nearly always goes D for governor: not a bellwether; just likelihood for voters having poor general election choices.

There are currently 31 Republican Governors and 18 Democrats. One is an independent.

Who has the biggest chance of losing a seat?

If the Republicans lost a couple it wouldn’t be a bell-weather event. They could lost six and still have the majority.

From the outside looking in.....it’s Bevin who’s under the microscope. He was supposed to be conservative salvation in his US Senate attempt, but his campaign was not ready for prime time. Is Bevin speaking with a strong, anti-insider conservative voice or is he coming across as a Chamber of Commerce kind of guy?

Grania, good questions and comments. I’m not in Kentucky, so I can’t answer your questions.

Problem is that Matt Bevin is fighting both the Democrats, AND the Mitch McConnell Crony Capitalist machine.

Local, state and national Republican candidates need to brand their campaigns "A Return to Sanity." That slogan would get a lot of support.

[If the Republicans lost a couple it wouldn’t be a bell-weather event. They could lost six and still have the majority.]

That’s important too because without maintaining the majority all of The Dictator’s agenda will be pushed through and Democrats will get exactly what they want.... Oh, wait.....
