Armed Services chairman calls on Obama to lower flags
The chairman of the House Armed Services Committee is calling on President Obama to do the “right thing” and lower White House flags to honor victims of last week’s shooting in Tennessee.
“Today, Speaker Boehner has ordered the flags at the Capitol to be flown at half staff. He follows the Governors of Tennessee and other states who are doing the right thing to honor those casualties,” Rep. Mac Thornberry (R-Texas) said in a statement Tuesday.
“The President should follow suit and order flags flown at half staff across the country, and he should do so immediately."
Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) tweeted Tuesday morning that he decided to lower U.S. Capitol flags to half-mast to recall the five service members killed at a shooting at two military facilities in Chattanooga.
President Obama is facing criticism from conservatives for not lowering the White House flags. Critics note that he did so for the 2012 shooting in a Connecticut elementary school, but has not yet decided to in this case.
White House press secretary Josh Earnest told reporters that he did not have “more information about the status of the flag over the White House” during Monday’s news briefing.
Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.), who served tours in Iraq and Afghanistan as a Marine, joined that criticism in a statement his office released Tuesday. “Five service members were killed on American soil, and the idea that the Commander in Chief is so far unwilling to lower flags in their honor is unconscionable,” he said.
“The flag and all it represents is sacred to our military, and the President must know that lowering the flag is a signal of honor and respect. The President should make this call immediately.”
