Appliance industry warns federal dishwasher regs would lead to dirty dishes

The home appliance industry has a problem with the Obama administration's new dishwasher regulations: They're a wash, so to speak.

The recent proposal from the Department of Energy is meant to boost dishwasher efficiency by setting stricter limits on the amount of water each dishwasher can use, among other changes. Under the plan, washers could use only 3.1 gallons of water for a single load.

But an appliance industry group says the new measures would be counterproductive -- as they'd force users to run their dishwashers more, and hand-wash, just to get the same results, in turn using more water.

"[The regulations] would result in dishwasher performance that is unacceptable to consumers, essentially turning back the clock to the days of hand-washing dishes," the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) said in a statement.

Robert McArver, vice president of policy and government relations at AHAM, told The Hill that the government is trying to "squeeze blood from a stone that just doesn’t have any blood left."

Manufacturers: But people will just end up running their dishwashers two or three times instead of once. Just like people flush more than once because of those little toilets.

DOE: No, no, it's cool. We're gonna put monitors on every water meter and fine anyone who uses more than our recommended amount of water per week. See? We've got this all figured out!

Manufacturers: But what about your own dishes? These rules will affect you, as well.

DOE: Nah, we'll just hire a couple of illegal aliens to wash our dishes. Problem solved.

The current ones are bad enough. Used/reconditioned appliance dealers around me are doing a booming business.

The elite buy expensive commercial dishwashers made for high end house use and circumvent the regs.

Currently dishwashers are terrible with current regs.

What in the HELL is the Federal Government doing when it presumes to dictate the terms for automatic dishwashers? It is presuming TYRANNY.

It's so far sideways that it's gone. Time to CHANGE THE WHOLE PLAYBOOK.

We just bought a new dishwasher a couple of months ago, after our old one died a long and agonizing death. It doesn’t clean as well and is way more noisy and seems to run forever, even on ‘Light Wash’ setting.......................

the tactic is to get a WASP to say enough is enough and start shooting up Congress or something

Problem is .... we all know better and are pretty confident we'll win on the other side of Marshal Law.

I think we're all kind'a lookin' forward to the fight.

IIRCC a few years ago the gubmint forced dishwasher soap manufacturers to change the formula they produced. The regs reduced the amount of the chemicals that actually do the cleansing of the dishes. This has resulted in folk using more dishwasher soap / powder in order to get clean dishes or by running the machine twice. Now the feds want to cut back on the amount of water used?

Watch the stats on ptomaine poisoning go up ...

My dishwasher quit working properly and our dishes were dirty. After I smacked her around, she washes them really well now.

You have to flush low flow toilets at least twice. Makes sense the same idiots will require dishwashers that have to be run twice.
