The Daily 202: Bernie’s base problems
Washington Post ^ | 7/20/15 | James Hohmann and Elise Viebeck

PHOENIX—Bernie Sanders is unaccustomed to being heckled by protesters. The self-identified democratic socialist was caught off guard here Saturday when African-American and Latino activists jeered him at Netroots Nation. Sanders’ inability to control the audience – he tried to shut them up and then he tried to yell over them – underscores his broader struggle to expand his appeal and highlights why his summer surge is unlikely to last.

The huge crowds Sanders draws are overwhelmingly white, and polling consistently shows that virtually all of his support comes from whites. After Iowa and New Hampshire, the first two contests on the calendar, Latinos and African-Americans represent a massive share of the Democratic primary electorate in the next two: Nevada and South Carolina.

The senator’s standard stump speech – a call for political revolution – does not include much specifically aimed at Latino or African-American voters. Asked specifically what he’s done for black Americans Saturday, he cited his vote for Obamacare. Asked to offer concrete proposals on what he’d do to help blacks if elected, he initially responded: “We’re going to transform the economic system so we create millions of new jobs.” The generalities only made the protesters angrier. “I want Bernie Sanders to say my name,” they chanted as the senator tried to speak. The event went so off the rails that the moderator abruptly ended it 15 minutes early. “Okay, good,” said a peeved Sanders. He then skipped a scheduled meeting with black activists.

In other words, it's not enough to support policies that benefit black and hispanic people if those policies also benefit poor whites. To be a pro at the race pandering game and a real player in the Democratic Party, you have to talk about policies that SOLELY benefit blacks and hispanics at the expense of whites. Bernie needs to learn to play the rules of this game if he wants to compete with Hillary. Same with Mark O'Malley, who got into the hot seat a few days ago for daring to suggest that non-black lives might matter too.

So the socialist Hispanics and blacks prefer the old white quasi socialist woman to the old white socialist man? Hmmm......

Oh yes, the northeastern liberal, who are the whitiest white of the whitey whites, now being asked to pander. Sadly, this country at one time had not elected a northeastern liberal since FDR, but I am afraid my once sensible country is going to commit suicide.

This is an issue that really deserves more attention from the media. Its completely insane that democrats are now expected to specifically exclude whites.

Its no different than declaring that Aryan lives matter and everybody else needs to shut the hell up.

That’s how it is, in our brave new world. If you say “All lives matter”, you will be howled down. Only black lives matter, to these loons. But they seem to forget that, when blacks are steady killing each other.

It’s a technique of intimidation and nothing else, because all the while that they’re screaming that “Black lives matter”, and people are apologising for saying that “All lives matter”, blacks are killing each other at disproportionate rates. For that matter they’re killing whites at disproportionate rates. Not that that matters /s

People are stupid. I don’t support Bernie, but he had ‘skin’ in the game back in the 60’s for ‘civil rights’. He was arrested and such fighting for desegregated schools in Chicago.

Bernie has 2 base problems:

1. Gun Control Nazis who don’t like his relatively benign stance on the Second Amendment.

2. Paid Clinton Machine hecklers.

For these racial agitators, what matters isn't economic policy or any other kind of rational, material self-interest. What's decisive is finding the candidate who panders to them in explicitly racialist terms. It's not enough to have a candidate who gives them food stamps and welfare checks. They need a candidate who promises special programs exclusively for blacks or exclusively for hispanics.

History shows Leftism is always doomed by its excesses. Martin O’Malley gets savaged for daring to say “All lives matter”... Bernie (BS) Sanders gets booed also. Netroots nation has morphed into a lynch mob... all things “white” including white liberals (Hillary?) are now targets. Reminds one of the French Revolution... the leaders were eventually also devoured by the madness they created... resulting in Napoleon. All the blood and suffering only succeeded in exchanging one despot for another. :(

Silly Sanders. He told black activists that he would get them jobs, and they got pissed.

A politician has to know his base.

Do you think the day will come when white liberals will regret the Frankenstein's monster they've created through their idiotic support of black radicalism, from "Black is Beautiful" donations to the Black Panthers in the 60's to support of riots in 2105 with #BlackLivesMatter?

And you're absolutely right, #BlackLivesMatter is straight out of Orwell. It doesn't literally mean that "black lives matter" - if it did, their number one priority would be working to stop gang violence and other sources of black on black crime in their own communities (since blacks kill each other at about 100 times the rate that blacks are killed by white criminals). #BlackLivesMatter is just another NewSpeak phrase that really means "Stick it to whitey..."

The irony is what has the democrat party really done that is positive for minorities? Ghettos still exist. There are more blacks unemployed today than ever before. If it’s about giving away things and making minorities more dependent on government is considered “helping” minorities, then yes, the democrat party has done a swell job.

The Democratic Party establishment has its own base problems. Up until 2008, Democrats like Bill Clinton and Al Gore at least paid some lip service to supporting the interests of working and lower middle class whites in small towns and rural areas. Obama wrote this constituency off completely and won by appealing to the trendy youth, to urban yuppie elites, and “minorities.” Obama could win because of record minority turnout at the polls. I doubt that Hillary can get out the vote in the inner cities and the barrios like Obama could, and at this point working and lower middle class white voters (even including union workers) have mostly written off the Democrats and won’t be coming back.

In the summer of 2008, in the midst of a extended family argument, my cousin's son (a privileged, young white college student, who was working for The Won on his college campus) e-mailed me and a few other family Conservatives this : ‘when Obama is President, whites are going down’. Well, I guess Obama has been pretty successful as whites are now being denied even the slightest civility. Sanders, Clinton and the rest of the Socialists really don't get what the head of their party has done. He wanted a race war and even his party hacks will be cannon fodder.
