The Confederate flag issue isn't an abstraction down here in the South. It's not about racism to Southerners, it's about culture, and a lot of people resent their culture being shamed and erased. Flawed? Of course, like every subculture under a microscope. Be careful of suppressing symbols of others; think of your own core symbology, and consider how you would react to calls to pull it down and erase it from public view.

While suppression of the Confederate flag is moving fast, backlash is building. Whither "celebrate diversity", "coexist", and "tolerance"? Were they just a ruse until power could be achieved?

Although a Yankee, I recently have checked out opportunities to buy a confederate flag on-line, just to stick it to my liberal neighbors. I have found two things:

1. Some cowardly sites have pulled the flag and no longer sell it.

2. Many sites who continue to sell the flag are COMPLETELY SOLD OUT.

I regard #2 as a hopeful sign that America is not yet dead.

There’s a little store here in Appomattox called the Lee-Grant Gift Shop. Their Confederate merchandise is selling like crazy. They can barely restock fast enough.
