Another name fades into aviation history as final US Airways flight set for October

The last flight for US Airways will take place this fall, and one more name in airline history will disappear.

The farewell flight for US Airways will be a red-eye — Flight 434 is scheduled to leave San Francisco around 10 p.m. and land in Philadelphia after 6 a.m. on Oct. 18. The US Airways website will be turned off. Airport kiosks and signs will change to American Airlines.

The two airlines merged in December 2013 and decided to keep the better-known American name. Vestiges of the carrier will survive for some time, however, as some planes won’t be repainted yet in American’s colors and logo.

In the last 10 years, mergers have eliminated Northwest, Continental and AirTran. Before that, Pan Am, TWA and many smaller carriers disappeared.

Good riddance! One of the wors, if not THE worst, air travel experiences of my life was with US Airways.

I bet even the last flight will be late.

Their name was much more descriptive of their product when they were called Agony Airlines.

The last time I took a flight was on Continental. That was in 2005. I will never fly again as long as the TSA is at airports.

I’d better spend those frequent flyer miles I have with them!

Gotcha beat: 1992 (unknown airline). Flight from San Diego had a sailor with a cough so bad I was sure he had TB.

It was absorbed by an even crappier airline.

Last time I flew US Air, it was a turbo prop commuter flight from Philadelphia to NJ. As they were in early taxi, I looked out the window and saw the gas cap laying on the wing. The flight attendant was also the co-pilot who was obviously not available. Got up, went to the cockpit and informed them that Philadelphia had a problem. LOL

I’ve flown American/US Airways back and forth LAX/CLT many times in the past few years. They’re fine if you don’t expect more than a soft drink enroute.

I work for a US Airways carrier. While it is AA and run from DFW, it’s largely US management running it. A new look, new fleet, new contract, new management, and I just got a raise. Watch out, Delta!

Super G was a great airplane and TWA was a great airline. Was a flight attendant for them from 1958-1960. Memories......

I had the honor (or misfortune) to be on the first, and as far as I know, only US Airways flight to land in Iceland. It was on a Frankfurt to Pittsburgh flight in the early ‘90s. There was a lady that had a medical episode of some sort and apparently Iceland was the closest place to land. We were stuck on the plane for a couple of hours and they refused to let us off. It was a very dismal looking place.

US Airways was not very good... but United is THE worst.
