One Shot, One Kill: Russia Develops New Ship-Sinking Artillery
Sputnik International ^ | 04.07.2015

Russia's defense industry is developing new delayed-action detonators, which could allow for more effective strikes against ships.

Russia's NIMI (Engineering Scientific Research Institute) is developing artillery shells with intellectual, programmable detonators which allow naval artillery to destroy enemy ships with one shot, institute department head Valery Lebedev told RIA Novosti.

When the shell hits a ship, it first penetrates its hull and then detonates the shell following an optimal delay, delivering irreparable damage to the ship, according to Lebedev. The US Navy is also known to be developing a similar system within the framework of its MEMS microchip project.

"The international trend that we follow is the creation of intellectual detonators which allow for the explosion of the shell in optimal temporal and spatial coordinates," Lebedev said.

He added that the new shells would greatly increase the effectiveness of gunning at naval, coastal and aerial targets by reducing the expenditure of shells needed to devastate targets.

Lebedev called the creation of low-sensitivity explosives and gunpowder another prospective direction for the institute. The explosives would greatly reduce the probability of unintentional detonation, during situations including fires at armories and combat zones.

I’d prefer a railgun.

You always post these things. Have you not notice that these announcements never materialize. In 2006 Russia announces that they will build a moon base in 2015. 2015 is now and of course there is no Russian moon base. No one cares as there is no repercussions for the serious of false announcements. By the Way year 2000 was supposed to be communism.

Military procurement isn’t just a corrupt process in our country- they are probably experiencing delays in development, hideous cost overruns, having to bribe politicians, weapons developers who are a bunch of cranks and $5000 ruble hammers. Endless boondoggles and no end in sight on fruitless projects. Just the same as ours....

except there is no rail gun

such a device is merely a gleam in an engineer’s eye

Tank cannon -- smaller than that on the M1 Abrams...

Target: first you have to detect and locate it, then you have to hit it -- and then you can be concerned with destroying it -- all while the opponent's sea-skimmer is closing on your own platform...

“Even though the EM Railgun looks massive to spectators, the truth is that it is finally in a size that will make it applicable to the Navy’s inventory of surface combatants. With this in mind, the Railgun is set for sea trials aboard the Joint High-Speed Vessel USNS Millinocket in 2016...”

The British were using Barnes Wallis’ version of delayed action fuses to penetrate hardened targets in 1944.

Hold the presses. The Russians have just discovered armor-piercing ammunition for navy vessels. Maybe they’ll have depth charges and torpedoes soon too.

Does this mean Russian ship’s magazines will have a delayed detonation when hit with tomahawks?

Isn’t this the same Russia that spent much time developing ‘telepathic mind control’, as a military weapon?

Looks like they would be much better off, militarily, to develop a better way to target their Navy’s most significant enemy, RUST.

Russians claim their mind reading device worked. Supposedly it determined that the State Secretary Madeleine Albright hated Russia.

I, for one appreciate sukhoi’s posts.

They are no less accurate than the press releases our “betters” make. (Consider job statistics!)

The only time Madeleine Albright hated Russia was after this event...

... Later they kissed and made up.

When a bunch of Albanians mistook Madeleine Albright for a hotel cleaning
lady, the secretary of state spewed a most-undiplomatic, and untranslatable,
stream of invective, a newspaper reports.

I know the guy that designed the MEMS sensor.

Small world.
