Hundreds of Gay Pride celebrants in Istanbuls Taksim Square were pelted with water cannons and tear gas by police in Turkeys largest city on Sunday.
Two people were injured, according to local media reports, but the resilient marchers assembled again several blocks away and commenced with a demonstration that grew to the thousands by days end.
Police had cornered between 100 and 200 attendees in the city's central square - a longtime gathering place for protests - and launched multiple streams of water at them to move the crowd down a side street in the late afternoon.
The riot-outfitted police also employed rubber pellets when the participants began denouncing the facism of conservative President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, AFP reported. A pair of journalists from the international news outlet reported harassment by pro-government counterprotesters and police on the scene.
Officials prevented the marchers from demonstrating at Taksim because the celebration fell during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, organizers later said in a statement.
But after police dispersed the initial crowd, they stood aside as thousands flooded the side streets to show support for LGBT rights on the anniversary of the day activists fought back against a police raid at New Yorks Stonewall Inn in 1969.

Too bad that didn’t happen in Seattle.
Why did the homos get the works?
That’s nobody’s business but the Turks’
Istanbul!!!
Pride in being a genetic dead-end.
What has the world come to?
What a happy day!
Absolute glee from my soul and candy for my eyes.
It gives me absolute joy to see Americans treat these queers, perverts and child molesters this way....OH WAIT! This didn’t happen in the Queer States of America.
Oh well, I can dream it can’t I?
The ugly-a$$ carpet muncher says “Normal people scare me”. No. She looks in the mirror and scares herself.
I suspect that there are some common characters spreading and promoting the disease of homofication across the globe and they are friends of the imposter in the WH
By wearing that shirt, she probably doesn't even realize, she just admitted to not being normal.
Normal people scare me
At least they admit they aren’t normal.
The one appeal islam has is the eradication of the faggot strain of sexual perversion. Why were the terrorist police using rubber bullets instead of real ones?
islam always lets me down.
(Can’t we just nuke the moslem world and ship all the faggots over there? Or ship the faggots over there and then nuke the moslem world.)
Is having a gay pride parade in a Muslim country during Ramadan wise? Or was it contrived by outsiders to stir up conflict?
It appears as though “normal people” are getting tired of these homosexuals always getting up in our face.
Yesterday’s Homosexuals: “what I do in my bedroom is none of your business!”
Today’s homosexual: “the first thing you need to know about me is what I like to do with my genitals”
Tomorrows homosexual: Agree with me or you’ll be punished by the government
RE: Is having a gay pride parade in a Muslim country during Ramadan wise?
Turkey is a little bit more “tolerant” of gays. I’d like to see them do it in say, Iran or UAE or Qatar or Saudi Arabia...
And the culmination of their “pride” would be actually organizing something near ISIS controlled Iraq or Syria.
Will this parade escapade put an end to that?
LOL... not Constantinople.
I really bet this gets absolutely NO coverage in the USA.
RE: Will this parade escapade put an end to that?
I hope so. But by tolerant, I mean TO A CERTAIN DEGREE.
As a Muslim nation, and unlike say, Iran or Saudi Arabia, they do not EXECUTE gays.
They are probably a little like Putin’s Russia, which tolerates gays doing what they do in the privacy of their bedrooms but not allowing them to FLAUNT their lifestyle openly in parades where kids can watch them.
