Read the article. There was never just a $25 ticket. Yes the fine was $25, but by the time they add all the fees, assessments, court costs, etc., the amount he owed from the beginning was $300. That’s the whole gist of the article.

He never owed just $25.

Well, perhaps California is different, when it comes to traffic (or parking?) tickets, than Maryland where I currently reside. In Maryland, if you get a traffic or parking ticket and pay it timely (without going to court) you pay the set amount of the fine (e.g., 40.00 for a speeding ticket going a certain number of MPH over the limit). That’s it and the matter is settled.

But (in Maryland) if that initial fine is not paid timely, then the costs to settle the matter begin to exponentially escalate (with penalties and various other charges). I honestly believe that governments don’t really mind it when a citizen doesn’t comply timely as it presents the opportunity for that government to end up collecting substantially more than it would collect from a timely payer. And this is for the same reason that I don’t think banks mind a customer over drafting a bank account temporarily by a few dollars as it it allows the bank to levy a $35 (or whatever) overdraft fee. From the bank’s perspective, the more overdraft fees, the better.

It’s all a racket to financially soak the inattentive or negligent. I make sure that I am NEVER inattentive or negligent in financial matters.

If California is different than Maryland in this regard, I don’t know.

what is the state to do if you ignore it

Do what the corrupt state of CA has done for decades now, and increase the taxes, fines, assessments and penalties until you squeeze the life out of these folks. Then seize their assets, homes, cars and throw those 4 million people into cages. Of course we'll need new prisons as all the others are full. A win win for the massive state corrections industry and their unions.

As I said, that’s the gist of the whole article. California IS different.

The ticket is $25 by law, but by the time they add all the fees and surcharges, the amount you owe is $300.

Check out some of the other examples in the article.

The people of CA have been complaining about this robbery for years. And some here think all this is just perfect. Choke the life out of them and keep raising the taxes, fines, fees and assessments. They did it to CA businesses and individuals.

The goal is take everything they can. The honorable state of CA needs the money ya know!

What's the big deal? Buy a new car in CA and pay 10% more for in taxes. Ya see this is all perfectly legitimate because the state says so. Ya get a phone bill and it's 5 pages long with all those needed additional costs, fees taxes. Don't bother reading all of it because it won't make sense anyway. They just pull it all this out of hat and make it official. Obey and comply.

So...on the $25 ticket the cop hands you it says, as one of the payment options, to mail your check for $300 to such and such address?

If that is in fact the case, it is bizarre indeed.I

So you have never been a participant in the alternate world of traffic tickets and/or drivers license violations?

LOL!

So there I was, on the shoulder of I-4 in Tampa Florida in 1994, waiting for the police.
I had just been rear ended by another driver, who didn't see that traffic ahead was stopped, due to a previous accident. He was pretty pissed that I insisted he wait for the police, since obviously I wasn't at fault.
My car was severely damaged and undrivable, but I was physically OK besides being very shook up.

So here comes the cop I insisted we wait for, since that is what you are supposed to do, according to law and my insurance company.
Cop is mad I made the other driver stay for a police report.
(That they were both black males might just have been a strange and unrelated factor)
Turns out my official, laminated, printed DL number was not “in the system” correctly. I'd carried the same State of Florida issued official DL for over 5 years.
How was I supposed to know the dimwits at the DMV had made a typo on the printed number I was issued?
I wound up being threatened with arrest, and had to pay cab fair, lose work hours, and show up at the courthouse the next day, to get everything sorted out. That took many hours.Remember, I was not at fault in the accident, and there was no way I could have been expected to know my DL number was printed in error.
I don't think “officer friendly” even issued a ticket to the guy who hit me, but at least I had some kind of police report for my insurance company.(Who should have totaled the car, but that's another issue)

Bizarre things happen every single day, any time anyone interacts with any government entity.

Consider yourself lucky that you haven't experienced it...yet.

I do now consider myself lucky and YOU, at least in that instance, unlucky.

Alright, I’m going to knock on wood now.
