U.S. Senators Call For Arming Ukraine
Radio Free Europe ^ | June 20, 2015

U.S. Senator John McCain has again called on the United States to send weapons to Ukrainian forces fighting pro-Russia separatists in the east of the country.

At a press conference in Kyiv on June 20 with two other visiting U.S. senators, McCain (Republican-Arizona) said it would be "disgraceful and shameful" for the West not to act as Russian President Vladimir Putin, in McCain's view, sought to dismember Ukraine.

McCain, one of the most vocal supporters in the U.S. Congress on arming Ukraine, said the Ukrainians had "proven they are willing to fight."

Speaking alongside McCain, U.S. Senator Tom Cotton (Republican-Arkansas) said Western leaders had offered Putin numerous "off ramps" to deescalate the conflict in eastern Ukraine, but Putin, according to Cotton, had ignored these chances.

Now, Cotton said, was the time to start building "road blocks," including the supplying of arms to Ukraine's military.

On June 19, the visiting U.S. senators met with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, who thanked them for their support.

Ukraine has repeatedly asked for international help to boost its defensive capabilities.

Western countries have so far declined its requests to supply weapons, while offering nonlethal military aid and training.

On June 18, the U.S. Congress passed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which includes a provision that would give President Barack Obama's administration $300 million for Ukrainian security assistance.

U.S. military advisers are already training the Ukrainian military. About 300 U.S. paratroopers arrived in Ukraine in April to train Kyiv's National Guard.

Ukraine and the West accuse Russia of sending troops and weapons to the rebels fighting in the eastern Luhansk and Donetsk regions.

More than 6,400 people have died in the over-a-year-old conflict.

Moscow has denied playing a direct role in the fighting.

On June 20, Russian President Vladimir Putin blamed the West and particularly the United States for the crisis in Ukraine and said the West should put pressure on Kyiv to help resolve it.

McCain was involved with the Clinton Benghazi War
and initiated the IRS attacks on the TEA Party.

6400 dead is a minimal figure...

And why is it always the USA that must supply weapons? The NATO nations have long used the Carl Gustav. One of the most effective antitank weapons ever made. In fact, during the Falklands Island War a Brit took out and Argentine Corvette with one round. Ship limped back to port on 50% power. Spent a week or more being repaired.

Point is, if Europe was interested in helping Ukraine in a meaningful way, they would have stepped up long before now.

Any arms we provide the Ukraine will eventually end up in the hands of the Russians. Haven’t we learned that lesson in Iraq?

I seriously wonder if Poland, Hungary, and Germany want the Oligarchs of Kiev to have an arsenal of US weapons. What's to stop those weapons from ending up under control of Nazis or mercenaries sympathetic to Islam extremists?

Who is America’s greater enemy?

Vladimer Putin or Barack Obama?

Barack Obama does more harm to America than Putin can dream about

Well, if McCain is involved in crafting something like this it is fairly certain that it will be constructed to guarantee that Islamists wind up with a good part of the weapons.

Just like every other time Senator McCain is invoved.

uhhhh...what I just said is that Germany, Poland, and Hungary should stand up for Europe. I also said the Oligarchs of Kiev can't be trusted with US weaponry (any more than the Iraqis could, I'll add that now.)

I suspect if US politicians turn to protecting and defending the US, Ukraine's neighbors will do just fine figuring things out.

Senator Cruz is correct, we do need to help supply Ukraine weapons, in their defense against Russia's invading right up to NATO borders as Putin threatens us all.

“When it comes to Russia and Ukraine, the path we're on doesn't make any sense,” Cruz, R-Texas, told ABC’s “This Week” while at the Munich Security Conference. “We need to be providing defensive arms to the people of Ukraine.”

Before getting weapons I believe the Ukrainians should submit background checks and undergo mental health screening. Any veterans among them should be disqualified from owning firearms as should their family members

uhhhh...what I just said is that Germany, Poland, and Hungary should stand up for Europe.

They do, we are all united in our NATO defenses.

German tanks roll back into Poland Bojan Pancevski Swietoszow, Poland Published: 14 June 2015

"Last week Nato used the base for the first big deployment of a new special force to defend eastern Europe from an increasingly expansionist Russia. American Black Hawk helicopters thundered in the skies as German tanks rolled from across the nearby border, along with troops and hardware from seven other nations that make up Nato’s Spearhead Force, which was set up last year in response to Russia’s intervention in Ukraine."

What I’m saying is they should set up their defenses without US involvement AT ALL. We need those troops on our southern border and anywhere else invaders enter the US.

Cruz is wrong again. NATO is worthless, and Ukraine is Europe’s problem, not ours. We already have our hands full with ISIS, the Iranians, and the Red Chinese.
