Since $500 now buys a weeks worth of groceries and gas for a family, Here, we shop in the grocery and the markets. WE spend 5-8000PhP per month and eat well. Imported NZ beef and lamb, local fresh pork. and unbelievably good seafood. From squid and octopus to tuna and shrimp...
The few things I miss can be sent from back home in Balakbayan boxes (roughly 20x20x20 box) with whatever you can stuff into them. They ship in containers and it takes a while to get here, but you learn to think ahead!
I love it here. I get tired of the heat, but we have air conditioning, and I am sitting an 73 right now. The humidity is horrible, since we have daily downpours. Last week, there were areas of flooding and people's houses had rushing water. Those areas are largely groups of "squatters". People scrounge what they can and build a structure to have some normalcy. You couldn't do that in the states.
I have learned a lot about living. Each day counts!

Yeah, I think what FDR and Eleanor did during the Great Depression, perhaps some of it was needed but a lot of it took us down the road to endless entitlements. Maybe if we just stayed at even what FDR did and not had LBJ add to it, we’d be a bit better off. I do think their hearts were in the right place and they did what they thought was right but there are times the Road to Hell is paved with good intentions. Maybe once things gotten better, they should have been scaled back. Even so, I do agree that at least they cared for the troops and in Eleanor’s case, she did get out into the trenches.

I think you nailed it. If it had language that congress could not get their greedy fingers on it it would have helped. At least what they did was NOT freebies, you worked for wages or the GI bill. My late husband’s father worked under the WPA building railroads or they would not have had food or housing. Southern Ind is as bad as the Appalachians in poverty. Most businesses are closed up in the area to this day, people there have to travel to Vincennes, IN to shop.
Under LBJ it became freebies welfare, I refuse to use the word entitlements. Lazy scum are NOT entitled to a thing generation after generation, that to my mind is their Reparations x 100. Those who paid into SS, Medicare and served in the Military those are per-paid Entitlements.

There should be no welfare programs. All should be WORKFARE like they were under FDR. Exception those truly handicapped where they can’t work. The only entitlements should be those EARNED and paid into, like SS, Medicare and GI Bill and Ret. Military health care. They were PRE-PAID.
NO welfare should be given to ILLEGALS at all.
From experience white, especially single males are excluded. My youngest brother 57 is alcohol dependent, he is now a total invalid due to Wernicke Korsakoff Syndrome. No job, no insurance. Not capable of working. Never really has been, no education worth more than a burger flipper’s job if you could keep his mind focused that long. Tenncare turned him down, SS will turn him down. My poor middle sis gets the thankful task of having him live in a RV in her back yard, he tore up the room he was in, in her home. He scares her grand kids. He won’t take care of his hygiene or take his meds. He needs to be in an institution for the rest of his life. No job, a walker, when he needs a wheel chair. When the hospital first let him go, they just dumped him on her love seat with the walker, no porta potty and he could not get himself up to go to the RR, where he lived for 5 months while Tenncare left him dangling on help they then refused. Hospital Patients Advocate was supposed to take care of all that. My Sis has enough on her hands, 1.5 jobs, husband with MD and she has Scoliosis of the spine. She has thrown him back out into his RV he stinks so bad and scares the H out of her grand kids.
What do you do with these kind of people? I’d of staged a fake suicide when he drank himself unconscious and called the cops, they’d at least have to institutionalize him for 30 days. Maybe by the 4th or 5th time they’d get tired of it and commit him as a mental case. At least put him in a nursing home where ‘semi qualified’ people could force him to take his meds, eat and bath.
But in seven years, we've seen quite a bit. :(
