Biden: In WW1, America Should Have Bombed Our Own Steel Mills
Grabien ^ | June 17, 2015

JOE BIDEN: "You know it reminds me, I remember back in 1973, I came from Pennsylvania and steel and coal were a big deal, particularly steel. I remember making a speech to the United Steel Workers sponsored by US Steel. There were 3,000 people there and I was a young Senator. Come out and I say, 'you know in World War I we made a mistake, and I was being not unusually Biden controversial. And, I said we made a mistake, we bombed the wrong steel mills. And, I went on to point out that there'd been virtually no innovation and improvement in American steel mills and that they were investing more money in pantyhose factories, pantyhose factories, than they were in steel, in, in advances in steel technology."

It makes as much sense as letting Kaiser Whelm pay for WW1 with silver from mines in Montana.

When WWII came along, our airborne troops and pilots were grateful. The silk and nylon parachutes were much better than the steel ones.

Bombing our own steel mills? Add another one to Uncle Joe’s Book of Gaffes. He’s made so many we might be able to make an encyclopedia set by now, lol...

To be fair, Democrats are applying a variant of that policy today: their policies are bombing our cities. /S

The steel parachutes are mighty hard to pack. That’s why Rigger School used to only be open to males.

There were some very crude bombers in WWI but they were not capable of strategic bombing. Nobody's steel mills were bombed.

And there were no pantyhose factories at that time. Not even during WWII were their pantyhose factories.

He is really sounding like the crazy uncle here.

I don’t think we bombed any steel mills in World War I. Strategic bombing simply didn’t exist. The closest thing to a strategic bomber was the Handley Page O class (O/100 and O/400.
There were also some Zeppelins (aircraft AND dirigibles) and Gothas. And some Capronis.
But strategic bombing as such simply didn’t exist.

Also its is a giant lie. There have been numerous new steel mills built, and huge investments in new equipment and processes.

He obviously meant WWII. An excusable brainfart, though he seems to have an awful lot of them.

I suspect the point he was trying to make is that after WWII the Germans and Japanese rebuilt with modern technology that was more efficient than our older steel tech.

He is apparently a believer in “broken windows are good for the economy.”

They were mostly grenades tossed from biplanes.

Grandpa was in the first Aero-maintenance Squadron, stationed in France in 1918.
(424th Aero-maintenance I believe)

Everyone alive at the time recalls Woodrow Wilson going on TV and making a plea for government investment in pantyhose factories.

There was a desperate shortage as some girls only could afford hose that barely went past the knee.

“He obviously meant WWII. An excusable brainfart, though he seems to have an awful lot of them.”

And he must have meant nylon hose, not pantyhose which were uncommon until the mid-1960s. The problem with the charitable WWIII interpretation of Biden’s remarks is that nylon hose were in extremely short supply during WWII precisely because nylon manufacturing was diverted to the war effort. Steel companies certainly were not converting factories to the production of nylon hose.

Nucor started paying dividends in 1973 and has paid them every year thereafter. They use modern electric arc furnaces and mini-mills. If you have antiquated labor rules and management then you can’t make money steel-making but if you don’t it ain’t rocket science.
