Full title: De Blasio says if rent-regulated apartments law expires it would be 'end to New York City as we have known it'

The “end to New York City as we have known it" could be upon us if Albany fails to act and renew rent laws governing 1 million rent-regulated units, Mayor de Blasio said on Friday.

In an unusually apocalyptic conference call with 14,000 AARP members, de Blasio said the laws — which expire Monday — are the only things keeping landlords from jacking up rents to market rates, often double what tenants currently pay.

Isn’t rent control just plain out Communism?

Rent control limits investment and new units coming on the market.

Lets have car price control. I'd like my new Maserati for $22,000.

No. You have government control over private ownership, which fits the definition of fascism.

Rent control was instituted as a temporary measure during World War II.

This just in: The Japs Surrendered 75 years ago, August.

Bingo! I say let it expire, along with the Big Apple—but hopefully everyone will emigrate to Massachusetts or France.

Hey de Blasio ... your failure to plan should not be my emergency. Maybe you should Baltimore and see what they would do.

Thomas Sowell on rent controls:

"Some people who would normally not be renting their own apartments, such as young adults still living with their parents or some single or widowed elderly people living with relatives, are enabled by the artificially low prices created by rent control to move out and into their own apartments. These artificially low prices also cause others to seek larger apartments than they would ordinarily be living in or to live alone when they would otherwise have to share an apartment with a roommate, in order to be able to afford the rent. More tenants seeking both more apartments and larger apartments creates a shortage, even [if there is not] any greater physical scarcity of housing relative to the total population."

Probably not, but always be gracious to commies in giving them a choice, hopefully they’ll take one.
