Yes seat belts, and the injuries have been called the “nickel ride”.

There is no sense in pretending (making up falsehoods) that others don’t get injured, and that the vans don’t come with seat belts, those cops were supposed to seat belt him in.

I’ve heard some audio of the van driver making repeated requests for medical help. The 40 minute narrative doesn’t hold up.

“It is police policy that all arrestees must be buckled in during transport. The policy, updated just nine days before Freddie Gray was injured, states “all passengers, regardless of age and location, shall be restrained by seat belts or other authorized restraining devices.””

I’ve heard that audio as well. It was posted on the Conservative Treehouse, if I recall correctly. The first call came from the van’s fourth stop, which was around 40 minutes after he was first arrested.

When the cops were chasing Freddie, he ducked into a building for awhile and then came out. The building was public housing, so there were security cameras that showed this.

Some has speculated that Freddie ingested his stash at that time. The autopsy should answer a lot of questions.

The paddy wagon wasn’t going off road. You just do not bounce around the inside on a city street. The other prisoner who was in the paddy wagon but in a different compartment heard noise in the back. My belief is he was trying to bust out and killed himself doing so.
The other speculation about him being high on drugs and the fact Marilyn Mosby will not release the autopsy report shows to me the officers did nothing to him.
Freddie Gray killed himself.

I didn't make up any falsehoods. I asked some questions.

that others don’t get injured,

I'm sure some have, but HOW PREVELANT is it?

and that the vans don’t come with seat belts,

I didn't say NEW ONES DON'T. I said that They didn't have them when I was younger, and I bet that some of them still don't have them. Matter of fact, the 'regulation' requiring the cops to strap in the arrestee's is VERY NEW and some of the cops weren't aware of it (according to some of the earlier articles).

those cops were supposed to seat belt him in.

When they put you in the back of a police car (handcuffed), do they force you to put on a seatbelt ?

Not to mention that he was requesting medical attention for nearly the entire time he was in custody

Maybe he shouldn't have swallowed all that heroin.

Actually, this incident Is the first time I heard of a ‘paddy wagon’ having seatbelts. None of them I have been in ever had any. IIRC, the seat belts are a ‘new’ feature and available only on the latest vehicles(paddy wagons). That is to say, not all the paddy wagons in Baltimore have seat belts. The same is probably true of most cities in the US.

Sure, you really know paddy wagon vans that well and have been in many of them, but never heard of the "nickel ride"?

The back seat of a car is not like the slick, metal, box of a van which is practically a guaranteed injury box, especially when you hands are cuffed behind you.

Heard of it, but never had it happen to me.

So, you are saying that for the past 100 years, ever arrestee that rode in a paddy wagon was injured during the ride ?
