Checking the stats, it seems Baltimore has been pretty violent for many decades. Last month's homicide rate was about the same as rates from the early seventies indicating the annual total was probably greater in those days. Baltimore did have about one third more residents in those days.

I couldn't find an annual homicide rate for Baltimore for those years, but I would bet it was about 300-400 judging by the numbers for just a few months in 1971-72 that had over forty per month.

regarding the food desert, the writers of the study overlooked the shop depicted in the Wire where Omar was shot by an 8 year old boy. The shop had a revolving bullet resistant window permitting cash to be tendered and groceries to be shunted to the customer. The owner was protected by a wall of bullet resisting glass.
