” I would venture a guess that a lot of them did not want a Mormon.”

you guessed right based on certain freeper comments during the 2012 campaign and even today. i thought the religion issue was resolved back when JFK ran for president, but i think some preferred a trojan-Christian to win in 2012 rather than have a mormon become president.

so that they'll donate in bigger numbers, put yard signs out in bigger numbers, make phone calls in bigger numbers, and generally create a helluva lot of enthusiasm.

YES!! I remember being very excited when Reagan was running. I made phone calls at the local Republican HQ, went to the precinct meetings, became a delagate to the Republican State convention at age 19. Yes - it's very important to excite the base! It certainly worked well enough in 1980 to produce a landslide conservative victory.

“I don’t have to cite raw data. Just google it and you can find out all the info that there is. Its not a secret that 3 million stayed home. I’m not revealing any secrets here.”

Okay, I read a few of these stories, and they point in inconsistent directions, depending on their bias.

So I still don’t know if there were 3 million “conservatives who stayed home,” or who, or why, period.

I would venture a guess that a lot of them did not want a Mormon.

I don't think that was it at all.

I voted for him, but without a lot of enthusiasm.

He was, and is, just a squishy Rino Republican, one without conviction.

When she apologizes for her boo Shiite in 2012, I’ll forgive her...

That’s an interesting, if completely incorrect statement.

I used to work in the magazine business, and it shares a lot of parallels to politics—you have all the headaches of the service sector along with a manufacturing overhead. Ultimately, the product has value only to its audience, and it has no shelf life. Sales are split into two distinct groups: new sales and conversions (renewals). You do not make any money on new sales; conversions are where you make all your money.

In politics, primaries are all about conversions; elections are your new sales. Now, this is the part the GOP has forgotten: new sales come at a very high cost, but conversions come only with production.

The reason why GOP primaries demoralize its own members is that party doesn’t require any real record (the actual “product” of politics). All the “candidates” have to do is produce a marketing campaign. That is why you have serial retreads like Huckster and novices like Carson—they don’t need anything to run! The GOP is all about new sales, all the time. That is a death knell in any sector.

Now, not only is the GOP not making conversions, they are actually driving people out. The only real question is the Elephant (how apropos) in the living room:

Is it stupidity or intent?

not only 80, but 84, 94, 2010 and to some degree, 2014. All were “base” elections.

  not only 80, but 84, 94, 2010...

I was very active in college in '84 as well and then I got very busy for a while and it wasn't until I started reading something called "The Whitewater File" (later renamed) in the late 90s that I got excited again.

Her rant yesterday on BOR was excellent.
She held him back and got her point across.

O'Really has always been a pinhead, and inconsistent to boot.
For the longest time after 911, his PC inclination got so bad I stopped watching him for a couple of years.
Why?
His PC inclinations. Back then, for the longest time he kept repeating, "We can't blame all muslims for the barbarism and bloodthirst of a few..."

Yes we can, Bill, and to his tiny credit after a decade he finally got the message : At least 160,000,000 killers and probably twice that many supporting them.

Today O'Really is at it again. What's more important, history or "political correctness?"

Edmund Burke did NOT say "...for men AND WOMEN to do nothing."

The only thing worse that a pinhead is a politically correct pinhead!

The interesting thing about Coulter is that she has the "economics" of this right.

See this article on a major contributing factor to the Dem's 2012 win. And specifically this chart below showing that a big reason why the Dems won was because they emphasized maximizing their base turnout (which is a low-cost effort) rather than expanding to the middle to grab centrist voters (which is a high-cost effort):
