Woman who was ‘beaten, strangled and raped’ by crew member is suing cruise company

A passenger on board a cruise ship who was beaten, raped and almost thrown overboard by one of the crew members, is suing the cruise company.

Now the victim is suing Holland America after it was determined that her attacker, Ketut Pujayasa, used a master key to enter the woman’s cabin and hide on her balcony until she returned.

During the attack, which lasted over an hour, Pujayasa beat the woman with blunt objects including a laptop, strangled her, raped her, and even attempted to throw her over the side of the vessel.

The 31-year-old woman’s screams for help were heard by other passengers, who reported them to the ship’s staff members.

However security reportedly took 45 minutes to respond, and even then were unable to enter the victim’s room.

Pujayasa, a 29-year-old employee originally from Indonesia, pleaded guilty to the incident which took place on Valentine’s Day last year, and was sentenced to 30 years in prison.

Now the married victim is suing the cruise company for negligence.

Her attorney John H Hickey told MailOnline the company were ‘grossly negligence’ for allowing Pujayasa to have a key which accessed all cabins.

He added: ‘To top it off, the cruise line’s system is that when the other passengers dial 911 they get the front desk, not security, and the front desk responds to the scene some 45 minutes to an hour later and does not even have access to the cabin?’

‘If this is not the definition of outrageous, I don’t know what is.’

In a statement Holland America said: ‘To our knowledge, no incident like this has occurred before in our company’s 142-year history. It is our highest priority to ensure the safety and security of our guests.

‘We do strongly refute the statement that emergency calls to our staff related to this situation were given anything but the highest priority.’

I have absolutely no interest - zero - in ever setting foot on a cruise ship.

That’s nothing. What’s really bad is denying a ROP member an unopened can of soda.

FWIW - This was a NUDE cruise. All sorts of things going on.

No excuse for this brutal rape, but the circumstances add to the discussion.

Well, then if it takes you 45 minutes to respond to the highest priority situation, that makes it even worse.

The cruise line directors were idiots for letting it get to this state.
They should have had her in a luxurious resort hotel and arranged a meeting with their reps (NOT lawyers).
They ask what they can do, she names a price, and they deal.
Neither side should have had to lawyer up.

"I have absolutely no interest - zero - in ever setting foot on a cruise ship."

My sentiments exactly. When I got out of the USMC in 1963, after serving four years in the FMF, I swore I'd never board another ship of any kind.

That is a cruise on a Klingon prison ship...

I’m pretty sure the nude cruise was for nudists only-they do the same things other people do, but not usually with clothed people-they don’t care for the attention...

Yeah. Between Captain Stubingino's first mate Gopheracci buzzing the coastline while the good captain is down on the Lido deck entertaining his 20-year-old Moldavian girlfriend, and the ever-present threat of getting the galloping trots because some genius cross-connected the toilet plumbing with the potable water plumbing, I think I'll take a pass.

I'd pay something for a two-day complete technical tour of the engine room and other technical spaces, conducted by the propulsion system Chief, I must confess. Other than that, count me out.

According to this article, published in 2 years ago, since the turn of the century 200 people have gone overboard cruise ships.

I'm sure some are stupid and fall off. I have read of cases of people getting thrown overboard by a significant other. But I wonder how many are thrown overboard by crew after being raped. I think they need to look at how many people have gone missing on ships he has worked on board.

I should hope so. How many people have vanished off those things, maybe because of something just like this?
One is too many!

My first husband and I thought a cruise to the Bahamas might be fun, and in the 80’s it didn’t cost a king’s ransom, so we booked on-and got so tired of being herded around by the little cheerleader guide that at the second stop, we ditched the tour group at a market and went our own way for the rest of the week-shopped, hopped a plane to Key West, got a room, rented a car and saw the sights-had a great time without the cruise, and was never tempted to go on another one...
