Four people could face jail time for cheering too loudly at a Mississippi high school graduation.
Authorities have charged them with disturbing the peace, punishable by up to six months in jail and a $500 fine, for disrupting commencement exercises at Senatobia High School on May 21.
One of them, Henry Walker, cheered, "You did it, baby!" when his sister's name was called and was promptly whisked outside, his mother said.
"I don't think it was right for what they did to him," Linda Walker told NBC affiliate WMC in Memphis.
The superintendent, Jay Foster, who pressed the charges, told WMC that outbursts during past graduations led him to get tough. When the cheering is too loud, he said, some graduates can't hear their names called.
"I hope we send them a message that everybody deserves the right to hear their child's name called, see their child walk across stage," he said.

Part of lowering expectations. My parents clapped but expected me to go on and achieve more, it was just a step on the ladder. If you have trouble graduating high school then you have other more pressing problems.
Then again based on some graduates I have seen they deserved praise for their “peak” moment.
Indeed. . .and in this case, probably a good chance this graduate was the first in their family to receive their HS diploma from a real high school and not while in prison.
I mean, really, shouting out to your kid is now a criminal act?
Certain people just can’t follow simple rules and couldn’t care less for common courtesy.
I’ll never forget what my dad said to me when I graduated high school: “From privileged senior to unemployed bum, in just one afternoon.”
Dad always put things in proper perspective.
I'm guessing this is the Uncle who supplied the beer for the tailgate out in the parking lot.
The SDuperintendent of the prison camp should be the one facing charges.
That's a keeper!
Unlike democrats and elections, they pretty much graduate most to all WARM bodies who stay in school for 12 years. Not a real education anymore.....more of a progressive doctrination with a little 2+2 thrown in to make it look real.
Applauding it as a real accomplishment is OK for those who aim low. And those who aim low must applaud the loudest as corralling shopping carts and flipping Big Macs will garner scant kudos.
“outbursts during past graduations led him to get tough. When the cheering is too loud, he said, some graduates can’t hear their names called.”
Another “don’t get me started”.....
The lack of courtesy is outrageous. That includes those that won’t stand up to it.
I experienced this first-hand at my nieces’ graduation 2 years ago. Very well-known private Catholic school, being held at a large cathedral. The hosts even specifically asked people refrain from excessive displays before the ceremony. Did they? No. About halfway through, certain kinds of people start hooting and screaming for THEIR girl. Then, it kept going, for every other girl, usually of certain persuasions.
Not only does this make it hard for others to hear their own, it makes those who DON’T get huge applause feel left out, perhaps lesser.
I despise these louts.
But, noone did anything.
They should be given a warning, then kicked out.
But, I’m not sure “charges” should accrue, unless they became “unruly” because they were “dissed” by being asked to shut up.
anyhow hip hip houra for your graduation
It’s a small town.
No dignity, no decorum, no respect anywhere nowadays. People have become little more than hootin’ and hollerin’ apes. And it renders everything valueless. People act like animals, and they should be treated like animals.
I’d go for a dart-rifle remedy. Like the guy in “Daktari” who would shoot wild African game to put them to sleep. A big syringe fired into the animals’ rumps, and they’d flop violently up into the air, writhe around, and slowly start falling asleep, with one leg protruding upward, twitching, as it gradually descends. Then, proceed on with the graduation. A well-behaved graduation.
My oldest son graduated high school last Saturday.
Before the commencement ceremony, the principal of the high school asked those gathered to please hold their applause, "shout outs" and all other nonsense to the end of the ceremony so EVERY PARENT could hear their son/daughter's name read out loud as they crossed the stage to get their diploma.
Before I go on, I'll tell you that I live in a very predominantly white area (90% or more) with some blacks, Hispanics and (shudder....) muslim families sprinkled in here and there.
It never failed: whenever a black, hispanic or muslim kid crossed the stage, as soon as their name was read their families would go ape-shit for 15-30 seconds and cause the entire proceeding to stop until they shut the hell up, so that the name of the unfortunate kid who had to sit near these animals could be heard by their parents.
WTF is it with some people who cannot control themselves and feel the need to act like a fool like that? Really disgusting and saddening what this country is becoming.
Shouting is now considered a crime. Looting and burning is not considered a crime, if done by a protected victim group.
To be fair, the achievement of graduating will be the greatest accomplishment many of those of that “certain persuasion” will attain. That hootin’ and hollerin’ is their last shot at any kind of glory. (I’ve been to enough graduations in the past few years to share your observation).
As is usual these days on FR, hot-headed freepers instantaneously are climbing all over the school and law authorities without knowing what really happened....as opposed to those of us who saw on TV the incident caught on tape.
May I refer these "jump-to-conclusions", "victims by proxy", "I-have-the-ABSOLUTE-RIGHT-to-be-disruptive-and-uncivil" freeper posters to today's "Rush Limbaugh Show" thread and read my post #49....and thence to post # 64 for a surprise I received.
