It has since been doungraded by USGS to a 7.8.
It was so deep, and so powerful that it set off USGS Earthquake sensors in California into thinking their were two local earthquakes. They called them "Phantom Events".

Wow. At least the elevators didn’t shut down. I saw in the Japanese news a lot of people stuck on the 52nd floor of a tower in Tokyo watching a Star Wars exhibit had no way down when this happened. Just freankin’ stupid if this had been any more serious.
