Thank you!

Just have to put the materialism aside and embrace a simpler life. I’ve always been a Thoreau fan, so that made it easier for me. My hubby was a tough sell, but he finally came around.

The fascists/socialists will just steal any money accumulated if they get their way anyway.

Are you in a safe place if things go bad?

My #1 items on my list of wants was a basement! I really wanted to be able to ripen cheese in it. BUT it’s finished and isn’t cool enough, darn it! So my list for when hubby gets here is to dig a ‘dairy’, that’s what the locals call a small building set into a hill because generations ago, dairy products were stored there.

I didn’t get a creek. Or enough hardwoods. But even here, it was hard to find property away from neighbors that had it all. I have a dirty pond and only 5 acres of wood, probably not enough to heat throughout the entire winter unless we live in 1-2 rooms.

We each have to just do the best we can. I was setup in the middle of a city as well, with food storage, water, ammo, etc. But the neighbors worried me more there!

Are you in a safe place, Jane?

Compounds of like-minded people would probably be the best way to survive or better yet, fight. Too bad you can’t all just move to ‘Hardens Hollow’!

"While we are fighting among ourselves in the name of social issues and equality, the “bad guys” are killing us (all colors) and looting our treasure. It’s time for the neighborhood “good guys” to stand up and the “bad guys” to be put down."

We need to concentrate on Congress.....

Pretty much....on acreage, out of the city. But, our next move would be to something a little further out and to downsize a bit.

Well, I’d surely love to be in a rural area in a nondescript house with a basement!

But, given the circumstances, DW and I are in pretty good shape.

Its my kids and grandkids I worry about. I cannot convince them that hard times are a’coming!

Hey, compounds with like-minded folks are best, so move to the holler when you can!

I can’t convince my son either. Sad thing is we could use his youth and strength here when the time comes, but he doesn’t want to live in the middle of nowhere. Hopefully our kids will figure it out before it gets too bad.

We need to concentrate on Congress.....

Yes, Congress is very important because they control the legislation and budgets, but the presidency is too because the president can veto legislation and issue executive orders bypassing the legislative process. That is why we are in this mess, because we have a weak congress, a liberal over-reaching president, and judiciary who will not strictly enforce the Constitution.

I believe the 2016 elections are the last chance to turn this nation around. This nation is well on to becoming a full blown socialist state with more people receiving a check from government social programs each day. People are drunk on socialism and cannot foresee the ultimate outcome. As more of the working poor join the ranks of the welfare poor, this nation is devolving into economic chaos. It is already in social chaos.

Ultimately the welfare poor will be fighting the working poor for the last remnants and crumbs of capitalism until there is nothing left of value. If the "good guys" are to survive they will have to stand and unite with those of similar cause and values starting at the very lowest levels.

Plan for the worst, hope for the best.

That is about all I can do.

“Are you in a safe place if things go bad?”

I’ve just completed the process of liquidating virtually everything I have for just the reasons we’ve been talking about. I’ve given everything I legally can to my offspring without letting the government take any of it. They, in turn have procured property in a location that would be as safe as any that we can flee to if the need arises. Being old, the only other contribution I could make is my extensive knowledge of how to live off the land and of primitive survival skills. The younger ones would have to implement them.

Even though the place we have to go to is isolated; we have discussed the problem of defending the perimeter if things get really bad. Hoardes of starving desperate people, some of which may be known by us(or worse, related) present us with many a sad discussion of how far we would go to protect the immediate family. It’s hard to know until and unless the time comes.

Regardless, we have the satisfaction of knowing we may be depriving a ruthless and increasingly lawless government of some of our hard earned money and that it won’t be financing deadbeats and sluggards.

“The fascists/socialists will just steal any money accumulated if they get their way anyway.”

This is so true! Families whose elders have worked all their lives building businesses for them are losing everything because of government regulations. Your teaching of the value of a simpler, less materialistic life might just be the most valuable thing you could give your family. “Enough is as good as a feast.”

Sounds like you have implemented the perfect solution. I’m glad your kids are on board. I think having older, wiser people with the skills and know-how combined with younger stronger healthier people is the perfect combination. I worry that we are older and don’t have any of those youngsters around. Maybe my son will come around in time :-)

“Families whose elders have worked all their lives building businesses for them are losing everything because of government regulations. Your teaching of the value of a simpler, less materialistic life might just be the most valuable thing you could give your family”

we are going to open a couple of small businesses here, and just checking in to all the regulations and tax issues is overwhelming! And we’re pretty good with stuff like that – my husband is a compliance manager at a large power plant and I always do our own taxes because I have found other people tend to make mistakes. More than I do anyway. So I can imagine how overwhelming it will be for somebody who just wants to do the creative side.

I think by going simple might be seen as being eccentric rather than wise :-) I think it was when I was making my own laundry soap that my kids were just shaking their heads!
