Very funny; years ago I used to walk with a co-worker after lunch, sometimes through a crappy area. He asked if I could outrun some thugs lounging nearby, and I said, “No, but I’ll outrun you...”
Sure; here in NJ they have an annual bear hunt, and they want to increase the number killed. They are being pushed further and further into the northwest by development, and encounters are increasing. While I hike near them, I would not like living near them; the closest ones are probably a good 30 minutes away from me. Even deer are at least 15 minutes away.
Yes, it was frightening; needless to say I’m a lot more aware of my surroundings now when I hike.
Deer are a nuisance in ways that aren’t obvious to those who don’t live surrounded by a large population of them. Motion activated exterior lighting on your house goes on and off all night to the point that you just get rid of them. Same with motion activated exterior security systems. Garden? Forget it. Driving from dusk to dawn becomes nerve-wracking because you never can tell when one will pop out of the undergrowth and dart into the road. And, where there’s one there’s three, count on it, don’t let off the brake and accelerate just because the one cleared the road. You don’t want to collide with one, serious damage to the vehicle and they can ride up over the hood into the windshield. With enough speed, you’re seriously injured or killed.
They are a big problem here in NJ; on top of that we have Lyme Disease from them. I had it last year; I don’t believe anyone who gets it opposes removing them completely.
As NJ’s population sprawls further west & south, more and more people have to check their children for ticks every time they come in from playing in the backyard. I would find that burdensome...
I’ve gotten the impression that NJ might actually be losing population overall, rightly or wrongly. Is the sprawl commuting into NYC?
NJ is losing legitimate (legal) population (and we recently lost an electoral vote, as did NY, to reflect that); with illegals, though, the population is stable. Much of the newcomers either don’t work or work in jobs like landscaping or restaurants; the number of NJ residents commuting to NYC has been steadily dwindling (as NYC loses good jobs). This was an issue raised when Dems wanted to build a third tunnel under the Hudson River connecting NJ & NYC; proponents were reduced to arguing that it might be needed for people who wanted to see a Broadway show. Most telling was a recent debate around possibly ending some overnight train service to NYC; demand had fallen so low, and the states can’t keep subsidizing sending empty trains back & forth without significant fare increases on the remaining users...
Friends working in NYC say there are a lot less people on the trains in the morning; the NYC metro area is dying, and the illegals are being trafficked here to hide that fact (so we don’t have actual ghost towns and empty schools).
