Florida teen who took NFL player to prom dies

The Florida teen whose dream came true when an NFL player escorted her to the prom has died, hospital officials announced Friday.

Khameyea Jennings, 18, of Jacksonville, who was diagnosed with liver cancer in 2013, died Thursday, the Florida Times-Union reported, citing Wolfson Children’s Hospital spokesman Cindy Hamilton.

Earlier this month, Jennings went to her prom with Jacksonville Jaguars defensive tackle Sen'Derrick Marks. The pair wore matching white and gold formalwear and drove to the Frank H. Peterson Academies of Technology prom in Marks’ Lamborghini.

Marks, flowers in hand, had visited Jennings in April at Wolfson, where she was undergoing treatment, and asked the teen to prom after the nonprofit Dreams Come True approached the Jaguars about the prom invitation. Marks said at the time he jumped at the chance to make a difference in Jennings’ life.

Jennings' mother said the teen enjoyed the opportunity to attend prom without having to worry about her cancer treatments.

“She said this is a day to be normal,” Laquandra Jennings told the Times-Union at the time, “not to have to worry about needles, chemo, potassium levels. Just a day to be a teenager and enjoy the prom.”

“I really want to make a difference,” Marks said on prom night. “I want to do something where you actually make someone’s day, to make a difference in someone’s life.”

I can’t believe a 18 year old girl could not get on the transplant list. They even have a procedure now where a family member can donate a part of their liver to a family member.
Terribly sad.

yeah I was thinking the same thing.I know a lot of these guys get in trouble but sometimes they are asked to do things that people their age would not be prepared to do. It’s nice when they step up. Poor girl.
what a contrast. a 200 something pound athlete in the best of shape and a woman dying of cancer. Although the picture is tiny she looks lovely for the prom. I hope she had a great time lhat night

So sad she’s gone,, but so glad she had one last night to just be like the other kids,,

He is to be commended. Doubt the MSM will give him his due,, but I suspect he didn’t do it for the fanfare. Class Act!

from the article:

“I really want to make a difference,” Marks said on prom night. “I want to do something where you actually make someone’s day, to make a difference in someone’s life.”

That is exactly what Sen'Derrick Marks accomplished. A job well done.

The news here in Jacksonville covered it and we’re proud of our football player for taking her to the prom.

She really does look happy.

It is nice that she had at least a little bit of joy.

Once cancer spreads from the liver, it is often nearly impossible to contain.
When that happens, a new liver won’t help and may hurt, since the transplant anti-rejection drugs are hard on the body.
Terribly sad. Praying for the family.

Oh, that’s too bad.

I hope she had a great time and wonderful last days with family and friends.

Just too darn young to leave us.

Rest in Peace

I imagine that it had metastasized and nothing could be done. Even a year for Liver Cancer is a long time.

The guy seemed like a decent man. Good for him. It is always tough to see a child die.
