US mathematician John Nash, whose life story was turned into the Oscar-winning film A Beautiful Mind, has died in a car crash, local media has reported.

Nash, 86, and his wife Alicia were both killed when their taxi crashed in New Jersey, the reports said.

The mathematician is renowned for his work in game theory, winning the Nobel Prize for Economics in 1994.

His breakthroughs in maths - and his struggles with schizophrenia - were the focus of the film.

Would seat belts have saved them?
I mean it is really odd that if seat belts DO save lives that taxi and bus riders don’t use them.

i’ve always wondered why buses don’t have seatbelt. Taxi’s do and the issue was brought up in the attached article which has photos too.

During the recent tin crash where victims flew through the air to get lodged in small spaces, I noticed talk now of putting seat belts on trains.

I don’t mind. I feel much safer in my car when bucked in.

I just remembered that Bob Simon, CBS reporter, was killed a few months ago in a taxi crash.

Belts on trains? They’re cattle cars, there’s as many if not more standing as sitting. What would that mean, sitting room only? Then again, maybe the government would want Amtrak to take over state and city railways.

Sounds like if they’d worn seatbelts they would have survived. Sad.

” They became mental health care advocates when their son John was also diagnosed with schizophrenia.”

Did not know their son is schizophrenic also.

The State Patrol in our area has been placing a new emphasis on seat belt enforcement recently. It is sometimes difficult for me to believe that there are people who do not use their safety belts these days. There are so many bad drivers on the roads these says that every time you get out on the road there is always a chance that one of them will cross your path. When I am driving our van especially which has us seated a little higher than cars, I am always amazed at the number of drivers on the freeway who are either texting or doing something else with their phones while traveling 65 or 70mph down the freeway.

In the 25 years that I worked on a fire department, the vast majority of fatalities at motor vehicle accidents that I saw were directly related to people not wearing their seat belts. So I guess that I am a stronger believer in them than most. I also saw many more MVAs with horrific damage to the vehicles where once we managed to extricate the occupants they had only minor injuries which was quite amazing in many cases.

May the two of them rest in peace.

After Bob Simon of CBS Snooze was killed in a similar way, you have to wonder how well the cabs in NYC are staffed.

How wonderful that they both got to go together....although sleeping would have been preferred I am sure. I think it is wonderful that either one had to see the other die. That in a way is a gift especially after being married over 60 years. Losing a spouse is horrible but very rarely do both go at the same time. I wouldn’t mind dying at the exact minute as my wife (but I don’t know about a car crash)....

i’ve always wondered why buses don’t have seatbelt.

I used to do contract work with a school bus manufacturer and asked the same question. Management replied that they had no problem with installing seat belts in the buses but study after study (including government studies) showed that the kids were safer without them. So it was not a matter of cost.

There are people exempt from seat belt laws, delivery people making frequent stops, and cops to name a couple...
