Attorney General Loretta Lynch believes the United States will be “less safe” if Congress doesn’t reauthorize the Patriot Act.
Speaking to “CBS This Morning,” Lynch expressed concerns about not allowing the National Security Agency’s bulk collection of millions of Americans’ phone records.
“My biggest fear … is that we will lose important eyes on people who have made it clear … that their mission is to harm American people here and abroad,” Lynch said
She continued, “I think that we run the risk … of essentially being less safe. I think that we lose important tools. I think that we lose the ability to intercept these communications, which have proven very important in cases that we have built in the past. I am very concerned that the American people will be unprotected if this law expires. I’m hopeful, however, that Congress, who I know is working on this issue, will come to a resolution.”
Lynch’s comments come as the Senate is set to vote today on the expiring sections of the Patriot Act.
Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has opposed the House bill to reauthorize the post-Sept. 11 law while significantly changing the NSA’s bulk collection, preferring to simply renew the Patriot Act. But he told reporters Tuesday that he will allow a vote on the measure that passed the House overwhelmingly last week and has the backing of the Obama administration.
“Regardless of what the House’s position may be, we have an obligation to deal with the Patriot Act,” the Kentucky Republican said. “And we’re going to deal with it this week. And it’s my view that letting it expire is not a responsible thing to do.”
Former NSA contractor Edward Snowden’s revelations about the NSA program spurred some Republicans and Democrats to demand an end to the bulk collection.

The government is collecting everything on everybody so that they have the information needed to take down ANYONE who becomes a political threat.
This I believe is the very reason we had John Roberts suddenly change his position on Obama Care. It's one of the reasons why we have a congress that is completely complicit in the crimes of the current administration. On and on.
We are positioned very much like Pre WW2 Nazi Germany. The Nazis did their evil deeds mostly through the mass collection of information. We are following the same path but with an even more effective system.

Bullcrap. They intercepted Major Hassan emailing with Anwar al alaki. They intercepted the Tarnaev brothers going to Chechnya and they brazenly had jihadi crap posted online. The Russians even warned them.
Nothing happened.
And what does the government do? They name veterans, Christians, and people who admire the constitution as terrorists.
They open the border for millions of central Americans who have never seen a flush toilet.
They import hundreds of thousands of jihadis from Conflict zones and admit they cannot possibly be fully screened.
They supply weapons to Syrian insurgents, ie,,ISIS.
They ran weapons to the Mexican drug cartels to justify a crackdown on the second amendment here at home.
Worst and utterly tyrannical, they use the very tools of government against TEA, a fully legitimate political movement. Using the IRS to suppress political opponents is utterly the act of an authoritarian government.
So now we don’t trust you and we do not want Patriot.
In the parlance of US lawmaking, the exact opposite of what a bill is can be found by looking at the title. “Affordable healthcare act” is a fine example.
In America you are more likely to die from a ladder fall while cleaning gutters or putting up Christmas decorations than to be killed by a terrorist.
You are even more likely to die in a masturbation strangulation accident.
This constant fear mongering is the only danger we face in America.
