Fossil fuels subsidised by $10m every minute, says IMF
Guardian UK ^ | Monday 18 May 2015 09.30 EDT | Damian Carrington

Fossil fuel companies are benefitting from global subsidies of $5.3tn (£3.4tn) a year, equivalent to $10m every minute of every day, according to a startling new estimate by the International Monetary Fund.

The IMF calls the revelation “shocking” and says the figure is an “extremely robust” estimate of the true cost of fossil fuels. The $5.3tn subsidy estimated for 2015 is greater than the total health spending of all the world’s governments.

The vast sum is largely due to polluters not paying the costs imposed on governments by the burning of coal, oil and gas. These include the harm caused to local populations by air pollution as well as to people across the globe affected by the floods, droughts and storms being driven by climate change.

As is normal, the lack of a desired tax (or size of a desired tax) is called a subsidy in liberal terminology. Of course, the liberal blogsphere is leaping upon this. While the IMF figures are based upon $25 per ton of CO2 released, blogs are saying that is far too small, it should be $100 or $150 or even $200 per ton.

Notably, the IMF singles out coal as being the worst of the worst.

Horsesh!t intangible costs of producing something not socially, ecologically or politically acceptable from which they cannot directly siphon tax money from the outset.

Liberals have this talk of “lost tax revenue” concept they actually think that they’ve been deprived of, forced to seek out alternatives of revenue from, or just don’t like the accepted demented liberal norm.

Complete BS. They have no idea about scrubbers or anything real.

Indeed. Just the point I was going to make. They are talking about real subsidies but rather nonexistent fines, fees, and taxes, which they think should exist.

It could just as easily be said that subsidies to Leftists, in allowing them to exist without paying 90% in taxes, costs the planet trillions of dollars every year.

Doubt it’s true.

Yet probably still less than all the choochoo trains carrying people in the US.

“It’s not who votes, it’s who counts the votes”

It’s not what the results are. It’s who creates the metric the results are based off of.

Some anti-oil moron threw a dart at a board and ran with the result.

Hey Guardian,

Math is not your friend.

Never has been.

Never will.

Same for good old fashioned logic.

So, stick to liberal journalism, which requires no ability in either subject.

As for the IMF, Thumper’s mother’s quote comes to mind: “If you can’t say nothing nice, don’t say nothing at all.”

Anything from the Guardian UK is suspect. This is exactly what we would expect from them.

Most of the price of gas is tax it seems but that isn’t enough?

Oh they care... Further down is some of the money concepts - tax fossil fuels out of existence and there is no longer a need to subsidize alternative energy projects as they’ll suddenly become financially viable.. or so the theory goes.

Absent from the equation is the number of people who will no longer be able to buy energy sources in any format. Absent is the welfare required to keep all those now ‘redundant’ people alive.

Bet China is having a great laugh at the report and the expected news storm about how western nations should kill their economies.

They are COUNTING on the normal helpless consumer having no alternative but GOVERNMENT. The GOVERNMENT that will tax the hell out of, relentlessly hound and savage their assets to make them pay “their fare share” so that the helpless consumer sheep doesn’t have to conserve energy by using an extra blanket.

All so that GOVERNMENT - liberal GOVERNMENT can get that fricking sheep vote.

Taxing industry for problems caused by “climate change” is really a stretch of imagination IMHO. This is ridiculous, but I suppose makes perfect sense to some liberal. From what I’ve seen, climate change is natural,so who are you going to tax when a tornado or other extreme weather hits? The IMF people are assuming that CO2 is a pollutant....which it is not. Aren’t these people supposed to be educated?

Typical liberal lies. Not actual subsidies (or even tax breaks), but numbers they invent about what imaginary or overblown problems cost them to poke their noses into uninvited. Kinda like when the store marks a $10 item up to $100, cuts it back to $15, and trumpets “Save 85%!!”

Well, here’s the problem, the hypocrisy is at it’s best. If they really wanted to drive a point home on Global Warming, they would let the prices go up by reducing the subsidies so that there would be more drastic pushes to change.
