An assistant conductor on the Amtrak train that derailed Tuesday said she heard the engineer tell someone the train had been struck by something, the National Transportation Safety Board said Friday.

NTSB member Robert Sumwalt said the 39-year-old assistant conductor, interviewed for the first time Friday, could hear the radio transmissions of engineer Brandon Bostian. She heard the engineer of a SEPTA train say that the windshield of his train had been struck by something and that he had placed his train in an “emergency stop.” She said she then heard “her engineer” say he believed their train may have been struck by something too.

Sumwalt said investigators had found damage on lower lefthand side of the windshield of the Amtrak train and had called in the FBI to further investigate because of its forensics expertise. The FBI would be on the scene Friday night, he said.

Sumwalt also said that Bostian, 32, had been fully cooperative with investigators. Bostian, whose lawyer said he suffered a concussion in the crash, remembers ringing the train’s bell as he went through the north Philadelphia station, but nothing else. . .

Big problem is slamming brakes on the curve, especially at the high speed.
That puts tremendous load on the rails, full mass of the train at particular speed exerts side force on the rails, causing train to skip the rails or rip the rails.
Less force is exerted if train continued at the higher speed without braking, it might have made it around the curve. Force on rails would be one wagon at a time and centrifugal force from adjacent wagons, rather than full force of train against the curved tracks.
Train could have had better chance of making it rather than ripping the rails and crashing.
Wonder if they teach train drivers caution of braking on the curves.

Trains are supposed to break apart in Emergency Braking in order to reduce momentum.

“BULL CRAP!! Nothing but bull crap.”

Did you hear the tapes of radio transmissions?

No, have you?

Yes, I certainly believe that there was a radio discussion about the SEPTA (i.e., the train that did NOT derail) train being hit by something but I’m hesitant to believe that the DERAILED train’s engineer said he was hit by something.

As far as the the engineer of the derailed train “cooperating fully”, I don’t consider lawyering up and developing total amnesia cooperating.

It was probably terrorism, but the Feds have to hush that up, because a) it spooks the sheep, and b) it counters Obama’s pro-Islam stance, and c) the ‘gay’ engineer was not paying attention to what his train was doing, and the Social Justice Warriors dare not let a homosexual look bad.

By what mechanism does a bullet or rock striking a train cause it accelerate to 106 MPH?

It has to do with quantum physics. I don't have time to explain.
