” I can easily see anyone panicking just before the final moment and desperately trying to undo their act. “

Or more likely, the conductor, realizing the train was going too fast rushed forward and pulled the brake.

The article text above mentions that an assessment of the train's movement and speed were "based on the train’s track image recorder." I don't know if the track image recorder is the black box but they did recover the black box, I read.

That reminds me - I saw a pic of the engineer. He was wearing a railroad cap that said "CONDUCTOR" on it. Is that a proper cap for an engineer?....or more likely, it was a pic from when he was a conductor before he made train engineer.

Republicans fault.

The Republican suck toilet water through a straw, so does it really make a difference what they are blamed with?

Exactly, He may have speed it up contemplating suicide when he probably changed his mind and realize O’Crap too late.

Can’t people kill themselves off without bringing down innocent people with them?

I heard this morning that the train left the previous station right on schedule. There would be no reason to try to make up time by increasing his rate of speed.

Yes, it will tell everything about the train(rate, braking, rpm, etc.)

However, the phone records will tell if just prior to, leading up to the accident whether he was texting or on his cell phone and distracted from doing his job. IF, they determine this, he could be charged with manslaughter. This is probably why he immediately lawyered up.

Checking to see if the lad was setting up brunch for the weekend via text. I would think this would be a part of DOT regs, and that the engineer would be required to allow access immediately, like a drug test

Note to self: Add that to the next union contract.

“I personalty believe more now that this was a suicide attempt.”

Or does Toyota need to do another recall?

"Republicans fault. If they would have spent more money on this boondoggle the accident never would have happened and the unicorns would still be jumping."

On page 1 of today's Wall Street Journal the right hand column story reports that AMTRAK was concerned enough about the curve to install added protection the south bound tracks, but didn't install this on the north bound tracks because they didn't think a train could accelerate fast enough to derail.

New, high-performance German locomotive that's too fast for the tracks? Maybe the Republicans are spending too much money on AMTRAK!

(Maybe????)

Exactly right. I come into Penn Station every day on NJ Transit. Amtrak is rarely on time. They couldn’t care less.

The activation of the emergency brake is the one thing that conflicts the "suicide attempt" scenario.

Mark Levin had several train engineers call in and they all agreed hitting the full emergency brakes was the worst thing to do. The engine begins braking before the front cars before the rear cars so they all take turns slamming into the braking car in front of them, driving each other off the rails. They thought he did that to make sure there was a derail.

Are they? In that case, of course he immediately lawyered up. I'm a lawyer and so is my wife, and we would tell our kids to do exactly the same thing. Rule of thumb: if you are in a room with people who can send you to jail, you'd best have your attorney in the room with you.

Wow, Interesting. I had not thought of the inertia of the following train wagons but it makes sense that heavy braking going into a sharp curve (for the speed) would result in instability.

Answer:

Chris Matthews Blames Lack of ‘Straight Lines’ for Train Crash
By Ken Shepherd | May 13, 2015 | 8:50 PM EDT

In two separate segments on his May 13 Hardball program, MSNBC anchor Chris Matthews blamed “turns” on the Amtrak passenger rail route for Tuesday night’s train crash.

Matthews lamented that Amtrak rights-of-way must respect private property and that it’s so much more difficult in the United States than say China for the government to muscle its way into providing as straight a shot as possible for passenger rail lines. Here’s the relevant transcript:

http://newsbusters.org/blogs/ken-shepherd/2015/05/13/chris-matthews-blames-lack-straight-lines-train-crash

PROBLEM SOLVED!!!!!

Thanks Chris!!

The train engineer speed up from 70 to 106mph then applied the brake when he shouldn’t have as it would cause the derailment for sure if the speed did not.

I say throw him under an oncoming train.
