If you’ve never seen “A Mighty Wind” - rent it and watch it today. Shearer was so funny in that movie. I won’t ruin the ending, just watch it.

Probably just got tired of a project that started as a short cartoon on The Tracy Ullman Show

Smithers is Shearer as well. He did 21 characters, including the Otto, the school bus driver.

This could be a death blow to the show. Or a creative opportunity to breath fresh life into it.

If they chose to have new people do the voices kids will be asking mommy “Why does Mr. Burns sound wrong”?

I admit to not regularly watching new episodes for many years. I watched one the other week, Bart had a crush on Milhouse’s ugly cousin who spoke Dutch and used E-cigs, it reminded me of that episode of “South Park” were the writing staff of “Family Guy” was shown to be a bunch of manatees who randomly chose plots.

When one from 1998 or before come on, I watch it.

You’re right! Smithers may also be on his way out of Springfield.

Smithers was to be hurried alive with Burns.

I stopped watching about season 8. Just go boring when the good writers all quit.

I consider anything that aired on TV after the 10th season to be non-canon. So Marge’s sister never came out as a lesbian, Lisa never converted to Buddhism, Maude Flanders never died, etc., etc. Erasing the later episodes from history greatly improves my view of the show. I enjoyed The Simpsons Movie in 2007 because the characters and tone harkened back to the earlier seasons.

They could probably find an adequate replacement for Harry Shearer that does a decent Mr. Burns, et. al, (there’s a great video on YouTube ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZjRyKOcSCg ) where they found a guy named Mike Kaminski whose Homer Simpson is so good that you can’t tell the difference between him and Dan Castellaneta, even though they have no intent of replacing Castellaneta)

But whether they replace Shearer or just retire his characters, I think its a sign that the show should have been canceled a long time ago. It really hasn’t been the same since Phil Hartman died, even though he played minor roles on the show.

I’m having some people over for a movie night later this month where we’re screening stuff that came out 25 years ago. I’ll probably do a Simpsons season 1 episode. I wasn’t allowed to watch the show at the time!

Fairly easy to replace a voice. NPR does it all the time. They have the standard male voice that liberals find most soothing and reassuring and that’s how every male on NPR sounds - Scott Simon. Shearer won’t be missed.

How many FReepers would do the shows for $220K an episode? $22K? 11K? Keeping in mind that there are 22 episodes a season.

So Shearer was making $8.8 million a year on less than 10 hours a week of work. No wonder he’s a liberal.

I never really watched this or cared for it. But I am amazed that this show is still on after 26 years.
Hope Harry has a residual clause.

I have to agree. It's sad now there are almost certainly more bad episodes than good. The decline in quality was marked after season 10.

And Brynn Hartman is sharing a room in hell with Elizabeth Bathory.

If the news is correct about how much he made from The Simpsons, then he’s set for life.

...

I think the real reason he’s leaving is about money.

Looks like a Spinal Tap spinoff. I'll have to watch it.

The Simpsons have been on forever. I used to watch every episode, but haven't seen it for over a decade.

Spinal Tap, but for folk music. Songs are hysterical.

And I gave up on the Simpsons about 10 years ago myself. My oldest still watches, as he did when he was kid (He’s 34) I’ll have to ask him if he has all the DVD’s. I know he has the 15 years.

Also, in the mockumentary genre - “Best in Show” and “Waiting for Guffman” - both very funny, even the 3rd or 4th time through.

Just watched “For Your Consideration” - it was okay. Wasn’t done as a documentary and just didn’t have “something” the other films have.

Allegedly the reason he’s “leaving” is because the producers are demanding an exclusivity clause; he can’t do any work other than on Simpsons, and there are other things that he wants to do.

Basically this is a game of contract negotiation chicken.

This is my prediction:

Fox is claiming that they want him to work solely for the Simpsons. The liberals will claim that Fox is stifling Shearer for his liberal views.

However, Shearer is an extreme leftist of the Noam Chomsky variety. He spends a lot of time criticizing Obama as well.

So the real story might be that the liberal producers/writers of The Simpsons are trying to stifle Shearer's leftist views because they don't want anyone from the show to hurt poor Bammie's feelings.

Just my thoughts ... wrapped in a small amount of tinfoil.

TMZ just reported that this isn’t a completely done deal. Shearer loves the show but wanted to do other things. Fox agreed but only if they could approve those projects ahead of time. Shearer said adios to that. Their sources report that they are still in talks as of now.

The women who does the voice of Bart threw away $10 million dollars by giving it to the Scientology cult. She lives in Northridge, CA in the San Fernando Valley.

I live nearby a few miles away and I would not buy a home in Northridge or any other area nearby if I had her money. It is flat and mostly businesses in the area. I would have a Hilltop home with rolling hills or an ocean view.

Harry is stupid holding out for more money. Easiest job in the world. Regis Philbin tried for a pay raise when he was in his late 70’s when he was making $20 million a year. He left the show and now his former co-host gets $20 million while he is on I think ESPN.

These celebs lose perspective.
