Senate rejects push to make Iran deal a treaty (39-57 vote count)

Senators on Tuesday blocked a Republican push to require a final deal on Iran's nuclear program be submitted to the Senate as a treaty.

Senators voted 39-57 on Sen. Ron Johnson's (R-Wis.) amendment, which was subjected to a 60-vote threshold.

It was the first vote in a series of politically tricky amendments senators are expected to take on a deal reached by Sens. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) and Ben Cardin (D-Md.). Their agreement gives lawmakers 30 days to pass a resolution of disapproval on any final Iran deal.

Corker suggested ahead of the vote that if the Wisconsin Republican's push was successful, it would likely kill the legislation.

"It will destroy our ability to have any say-so in one of the biggest geopolitical events of our time," he said. "The effect is we would have no role if we were to pass this amendment by Johnson, a friend of mine — we will have no role in this."

Corker said earlier Tuesday that he would "love" to be able to make the Iran deal a treaty, but suggested it was unrealistic.

Johnson is one of approximately two dozen Senate Republicans who are offering or have signed onto changes to the Corker-Cardin agreement.

Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) tried to bring up amendments from 2016 White House hopeful Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) Tuesday, but was blocked by Cardin.

Nine Republicans broke rank and voted against the amendment, including Sens. Kelly Ayotte (N.H.) and Johnny Isakson (Ga.). who are up for reelection in 2016.

Presidential hopeful Sen. Rand Paul (Ky.) supported the amendment, while his 2016 competitors Sens. Marco Rubio (Fla.) and Ted Cruz (Texas) didn't vote.

Result is a severe blow to the Constitution and increases the chance that Israel will feel they have no choice but to go alone on Iran.

result is an obvious Treaty per our Constitution will escape the scrutiny of the US Senate (thus defeating the Constitution yet again!)

USA remains Iran’s number One Target as their “Great Satan”
so we are expecting some serious consequences just as soon as Iran finishes its delivery systems for its nuclear bombs

(recalling also that Iran has already announced its top targets, NYC, WashDC, LA, SF, and fifth city I keep forgetting but think it was either Chicago or Boston?)

anyway, we are in for some very dangerous times

Thanks, O! /s

Iranian pirates seizing a cargo ship with legal ties to the USA did not help Obama and Kerry make the case for their treaty.

I am astounded how the legislative branch has so completely caved to Valerie’s man child.

Corker takes us as fools. He claims if the deal is viewed as a treaty, the Senate will be denied an opportunity to voice a position on the deal. Now, how does he think we are going to buy that hogwash? This is as blatant a lie as the one told by the mayor of Baltimore yesterday. What is going on with these in your face traitors?

Corker is a snake, a Democrat mole. There must be something very bad in his private life that he is being blackmailed for by the Chicago Mafia.

“The effect is we would have no role if we were to pass this amendment by Johnson, a friend of mine — we will have no role in this.”

Why does he interject the phrase “a friend of mine” into his response, as if the friendship is co-equal to the fact of Iran being guaranteed atomic weapons? Is the cuddly talk meant to disarm opposition to his bill? To make it seem warmer than it really is?

It’s no ‘blow to the Constitution ‘. It’s silly in fact.

President has authority to make any ‘executive agreement’ with any foreign nations- however stupid and dangerous the agreements may be. They have no force of law.
The constitutional response if the president won’t heed the advice of the Senate is removal.
