Europe faces a 'real threat' from Russia, warns US army commander

The commander of the US army in Europe has warned that Nato must remain united in the face of a "real threat" from Russia.

"It's not an assumption. There is a Russian threat," Lt-Gen Frederick "Ben" Hodges said.

"You've got the Russian ambassador threatening that Denmark will be a nuclear target if it participates in any missile defence programme. And when you look at the unsafe way Russian aircraft are flying without transponders in proximity to civilian aircraft, that's not professional conduct."

Gen Hodges spoke to the Telegraph on the sidelines of a military debriefing after an exercise to move live Patriot missiles 750 miles across Europe by road and deploy them on the outskirts of Warsaw.

The sight of a US military convoy crossing the German-Polish border more than 20 years after the end of the Cold War made international headlines and brought traffic to a standstill as people posed for selfies beside the troops.

The intention of such a highly visible deployment was to send a signal, Gen Hodges said.

"That's exactly what it was about, reassuring our allies," he said.

Gen Hodges pointed to recent Russian decisions to move Iskandar ballistic missiles to its Kaliningrad enclave, between Lithuania and Poland, and long-range nuclear-capable bombers to Crimea.

"I don't think a military confrontation is inevitable. But you have to be militarily ready in order to enable effective diplomacy," he said.

"The best insurance we have against a showdown is that Nato stands together."

Since taking over command of the US army in Europe last year, Gen Hodges has found himself on the front line of an increasingly nervous stand-off with Vladimir Putin's Russia.

Eastern European countries are looking to Nato, and the US in particular, for reassurance that they will not be left to face Russian aggression alone.

Russia should invade Poland as the current occupant of the White House would immediately surrender.

Cliff notes version for isolationists, Putniks & Paultards. This why we have NATO.

I could care less about Europe. Let the Russians have it. We’ve got our own problems to deal with. Hypothetical question: what would happen if the Russians took over all of Europe? Would it be the end of the world? At least the Russians are honest enough to admit that their government is corrupt and filled with communists. /end rant

Yes it would be the end of the world if Russia conquered all of Europe, and it would be the end of America.

Do you think the Cold War was just an illusion and that we and the planet suffered and endured so much to resist Russian conquest, for no reason?

"I don't think a military confrontation is inevitable. But you have to be militarily ready in order to enable effective diplomacy," he said. "The best insurance we have against a showdown is that Nato stands together."

He points to recent moves by traditionally neutral Sweden and Finland to cooperate more closely on defence with Nato members Norway, Denmark and Iceland. "Nobody's trying to join Russia. There's no country scurrying to get under Russia's protective umbrella," he said.

We need to prevent Russia from returning to threatening the world again, and we do that by nipping this in the bud now, in the early stages, not after we let them feed and conquer for a couple of decades.

Look on the bright side. If Putin overtakes Europe, he might drive out the EU, the persecutions of Christians, and the gay lobby. Win-win-win.

If you think America has suffered, you're in for a rude awakening. You argue for an America that no longer exists, and it is sadly amusing that you do not see the similarities between America today and the Soviet Union of the Cold War era.

That was total nonsense, as nonsensical as your other post.

I can’t believe that you guys find supporting the enemy amusing, and all of this just a game.

This reminds me of the 1960s, and the pro-Vietnam/Russia left, and the 1980s left mocking Reagan while supporting Russia.

Is that all you have. When it comes to freedom America(ns) talks a good game but it is more for "me than thee." If Russia took over Europe it would not be the "end of the world" as you claim.

As I stated earlier, America has enough of its own problems to deal with rather than trying to police the world by injecting itself into conflicts that only benefit a particular cabal, and it sure isn't We the People, nor for the purposes of furthering freedom.

You term my comments as nonsensical, but I at the least refrain from hysterics in claiming that the world will end because the "Russians are coming!"

Your arguments are weak and full of ad hominem. I haven't read one comment where any poster offers their support to Russia. Step away from the kool-aid. Just say no.

Russia is the only thing standing between Islam and civilization. Putin has protected Christianity and will continue to do so. Russia has converted to capitalism while we embrace communism. Russia will be the savior of all humanity.
