A Los Angeles-bound Alaska Airlines flight made an emergency landing at a Seattle-area airport on Monday afternoon after it took off with a worker trapped in a cargo area under the cabin where he had fallen asleep, the U.S. carrier said.

The pilot of Alaska Airlines flight 448 reported hearing banging from beneath the aircraft after takeoff from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, south of Seattle, the statement said.

Screaming could also be heard from the cargo hold, an airport spokesman said.

He probably thought he was going to die at altitude, and didn’t know it was pressurized ... :-) ...

Back in ~2001, I had boarded a flight in Houston (headed to Tampa) which had just queued up for takeoff, when I heard some banging at my feet. My neighbor and I quickly realized that someone was stuck in the cargo hold.

We informed the flight attendant, and a few minutes later, he was on the tarmac, blowing kisses to the plane.

I will never forget that. =)

After enduring this past winter’s sub arctic weather, I would probably make it OK.

The forward cargo hold on a 737 is climate-controlled and pressurized. Pets and the like fly up there. My wife was a former baggage handler for Horizon/Alaska.

The statement from Alaska say that his co-workers did try to find him and even called his cellphone and texted him, but received no reply. He’d been at work since 5am and was supposed to get off at around the time the plane took off.

The statement further said he passed a drug test. Not that it’s really gonna matter...he’s likely unemployed at this point.

That must have been a real “oh crap” moment when the guy woke from his nap to the scream of turbofans at full power.

If he was in cargo, he could open up luggage and put clothes on.
