Voters in Ferguson, Mo., head to the polls Tuesday for the first municipal election since a fatal police shooting last year led to weeks of unrest in the St. Louis suburb and exposed deep divisions between the city’s largely white police and government and its majority-black population.

The election for half of the city council’s six seats could shift the body’s racial makeup. About 67% of the city’s 21,111 residents are black, according to 2013 Census estimates, but the council has just one African-American member. Ferguson’s mayor, who is a council member at large, is also white. [..]

Yes. Let them regulate and govern themselves. It has worked out SO well in all the instances of this everywhere.

But early predictors of turnout—voter registration and absentee ballots—aren’t signaling that the election will bring out large numbers of new voters, election officials said.

I'm surprised the community activist in the White House didn't get the Acorn troops out to mobilize both the candidates and the voters.

This guy is moving rudderless and not even depending on his historical talents. Lost to world events and now lost to core principal events.

There has been no rioting in Detroit. No ambush attacks on police officers. Businesses are opening and not fleeing.

Ferguson stands alone.

You need to revisit history on how Detroit got into its predicament. Yes there was rioting and attacks on police. They then elected a democrat, high minority political infrastructure and went straight into the crapper.

Well, I should hope so.
After all the council really should mirror the jail population.

I’ll make a super guess here: they have to be black, right?

Ferguson is its own mess, Detroit is actually crawling out of its hole. If anything, Ferguson is where Detroit was 50 years ago and heading in the wrong direction. Detroit is actually heading in the right direction which is something that really can’t be said for any other major city in the country.

Ferguson is its own worst example.

Along those lines, but the end result is that those in control get rich and the poor flounder and die by some means. Money is the great diversity equalizer and it doesn’t discriminate. Ask Jesse, ask Sharpton ask them all (if you can find them in their Bermuda dachas.)

"If anything, Ferguson is where Detroit was 50 years ago and heading in the wrong direction."

That was my entire point. And there's no doubt in my mind that Ferguson will have to go through what Detroit went through before there is the political will to make things better. Just like Detroit did.

The biggest changes in Detroit are social. Its got a long way to go but any step in the right direction is a good step.

Detroiters are even taking their guns to church. When Rosedale Park Baptist had trouble with drug dealers and car thefts, Pastor Haman Cross Jr. told his congregants from the pulpit that they should consider getting concealed-carry permits.

"I love the Lord; I'm a Christian," he says. "But like I told the congregation, let's send a message right in front. I want the word out in the community, if you steal any of our cars, I'm coming after you."

Part of the change in Detroit is due to the fact that the social justice instigators have largely abandoned the city since the money dried up. Its too bad they can't be physically removed and excluded from Ferguson.
