Slaves Used To Catch Fish That End Up On U.S. Tables
Times Union / AP ^ | 24 March 2015 | Margie Mason, Martha Mendoza and Robin McDowell, Associated Press

Benjina, Indonesia ___ The Burmese slaves sat on the floor and stared through the rusty bars of their locked cage, hidden on a tiny tropical island thousands of miles from home.

Just a few yards away, other workers loaded cargo ships with slave-caught seafood that clouds the supply networks of major supermarkets, restaurants and even pet stores in the United States.

Here, in the Indonesian island village of Benjina and the surrounding waters, hundreds of trapped men represent one of the most desperate links criss-crossing between companies and countries in the seafood industry. This intricate web of connections separates the fish we eat from the men who catch it, and obscures a brutal truth: Your seafood may come from slaves.

I’m sure I owe these people reparations.

There’s lots of canned fish with Product of Thailand on the labels. But the article indicates maybe other brands maya also be using slaves , too?

This really is disturbing. If accurate, we want to minimize our patronage on this one! The cat food is easy to avoid because our aristrocratic cats won’t touch the stuff anyway. (Smart cats, why eat krap when you can eat real high-class tuna fish?)
But are there any major “American” brands of tunafish (such as Chicken of the Sea or Starkist or?) that are involved in this? We sure hope not, but if anyone knows or finds out for sure please let us know? THANK YOU!

I read the article last week. There really is no conflating it here- the operators of this racket are barbarians.

Go figure. In this country, people can pay big money to go fishing. Cow-orker just came back from a two-week tuna-fishing trip of SoCal.

That is a land where Islam is significant.

Sharia Law approves of slavery.

See my tag line for what must be done.

I don’t eat fish caught outside of territorial waters. One benefit of having a “Whole Foods” or “Whole Wallet” nearby.

I *only* eat slave-caught fish.

The only fish worth eating.
