New rules for N.D. oil shipments
Pioneer Press ^ | 3-31-15 | James MacPherson

Following a spate of explosive accidents involving North Dakota crude, the state on Wednesday began requiring companies to remove certain liquids and gases from oil before it's loaded onto rail cars -- a move industry and state regulators believe will make for safer shipments. The rules, developed over the past year, require all crude from the oil patch to be treated by heat or by pressure to reduce its volatility before being loaded onto train cars. "North Dakota's crude oil conditioning order is based on sound science and represents an important step in the ongoing work to ensure that oil-by-rail transportation is as safe as possible," Gov. Jack Dalrymple said in a statement. Dozens of mile-long trains loaded with crude leave western North Dakota each week, each pulling more than 100 cars laden with about 3 million gallons of North Dakota crude. About 60 percent of the more than 1.1 million barrels of oil produced daily from the Bakken region is being moved by rail.

Does anyone know what rail line is carrying the oil? I heard it Burlington Northern, but I don’t know that for a fact. If true, then I understand why Warren Buffet is advising Obozo to fight the Keystone Pipeline project.

:: require all crude from the oil patch to be treated by heat or by pressure to reduce its volatility before being loaded onto train cars. ::

Pre-treat for flash?
That “pressure to reduce volatility” part is a mite troubling. Is the DOT requiring pressure cars? That would provide “interesting” (as well as spectacular?) releases in a derailment. But, Buffet can charge more for pressure-cars, right?

Also, I didn’t see “treated by heat AND/OR pressure” in that article. Will the requirement be either/or, both or...?

Gasoline in Midland TX just went UP another $0.02 on this news, alone.

BNSF through Fargo into Minnesota, CN north to Canada's east coast. FWIW, Buffett is in favor of the pipeline.

The liberals in Minnesota will do whatever they can to shut down North Dakota’s oil production. In one part out of wrong headed environmentalism, in the other part jealousy.

...Buffett is in favor of the pipeline.

I thought I read where he had a meeting with Obozo and argued against it, but I can't find the source. Do you have your source?

You are right, Dakotan, but Buffett waited through a half-dozen years of very profitable rail shipments (and some horrific rail accidents) before making his pronouncement.

Buffet has said Keystone XL should be built, for years.

What kind of facility would it take to do this ‘treatment’???

How many years would the greenies hold up such a facility???

They have already held up the pipeline for more than 5 years.

How much would the price of petroleum products go up with such rules???

Buffett is choking America with his railroad having a monopoly on moving this oil.

Had the head of engineering for Dresser Swaco years ago tell me there are three ways to remove entrained gasses from liquids. One is time, two is agitation and three was vacuum. All three of which Swaco’s De-Gasser performed on mud returns during drilling operations.

The pressure they are talking about, I would bet, is a vacuum treatment prior to loading.

The actual loading, sloshing during rail shipment and the time the oil is in the tank car would provide quite a bit of de-gassing in itself and all the cars are vented.

Yes, he’s really leading the charge on that issue isn’t he?

By golly he’s been up there on the steps of the Capitol, he’s been to see his BFF in the White House several times before every vote and veto, he has put his reputation on the line in order to cut costs and save lives.

Right?

I have not claimed he is making some big push to get it done. Nor do I see it as his responsibility. But it is false to claim he waited until recently to announce support for the Keystone XL.

I don’t think it is his responsibility either.

But neither do I think it is true that he has “announced support” for the Keystone Pipeline.

I follow this stuff pretty closely and apparently I missed the first time or two when he mumbled that he thought the pipeline would “make sense.”

What do you think he is going to tell Becky Quick when she asks him about the lastest disastrous derailment?
