A spokesman for Gen Buhari's All Progressives Congress (APC) party praised Mr Jonathan, saying: "He will remain a hero for this move. The tension will go down dramatically."

The APC issued a statement after the result was announced, calling for "calm, sober celebrations" and warning supporters not to attack opponents.

"He or she is not with me, whoever does that," the new president said.

It is the fourth time the former military ruler, 72, has sought the presidency.

He ruled Nigeria from January 1984 until August 1985, taking charge after a military coup in December 1983.

Mr Jonathan had led Nigeria since 2010, initially as acting leader before winning elections in 2011.

Nigeria has suffered from several attacks by the Islamist militant group Boko Haram, which has killed thousands of people in its drive to establish an Islamic state.

Many voters have said that they believe Gen Buhari is better positioned to defeat Boko Haram.

FWIW, David Axelrod supported the Islamist (Buhari) in this race: http://freebeacon.com/issues/david-axelrods-political-consulting-firm-far-more-involved-in-nigeria-election-than-previously-disclosed/

“Buhari is a Muslim from Nigeria’s poorer North, while Jonathan hails from a Christian and animist South that is rich with oil.

“After Jonathan’s victory in 2011, amid accusations of vote-rigging, violent riots broke out in the North.

“Armed protesters took to the streets chanting Buhari’s name, and more than 800 people were killed in the post-election violence.”

No surprise.

Looks to me like this is a victory for Boko Haram.

An elected head of state with a secular government isn’t going to impress Boko Haram / ISIS regardless of his religion. Will he do more than Johathan? That’s the question. If the supposed Christian didn’t seem able to fight back, will the General. His past is less than impressive.

Nigeria’s gov;t is corrupt and inept enough so that it almost does not matter who is president - those who are the most capable at bribing and using political connections are going to be truly running the country.

I read on the BBC Boko Haram tried to assassinate Buhari, I know last summer there was an attempt on his motorcade which was bombed. Some in the entourage were killed.

The old President simply was not doing a very good job.

What’s worse? Voting for a Muslim who has a record of running the country? Or voting for someone who is not being effective against radical Muslims who these radicals are ravishing the country while the ruling government is corrupt??

Something to study.

Buhari opposed Nigeria’s strict anti-gay legislation that included death penalty for offenders. He was rumored to have taken money from westerners interested in overturning the law and encouraging “western liberalism” in regards to gay rights in Nigeria.

The tentacles are long.
