Community Control Is Destroying America’s Cities
YIMBY ^ | MARCH 27TH 2015 | STEPHEN SMITH

Much of urban America, and New York City in particular, is in crisis. Cities are becoming desirable again, but planning is still stuck in the post-war mentality of decline. Rents are skyrocketing as new housing supply pales against incoming demand, and while politicians and planners might see what’s going on, they are powerless to stand up to the NIMBY forces and stop it. From Palo Alto to Williamsburg back to Santa Monica, our wealthiest and most in-demand neighborhoods remain in their stunted states, walled off to growth, radiating everything from gentrification to global inequality. Our inner suburbs don’t densify, and the only other option for a growing population is to sprawl.

There is, however, another way: ignore “the community.”

Not the community writ large, but “the community” as a euphemism for those who are already lucky enough to live in a neighborhood that others want to move to, whether it’s a hip, gentrifying neighborhood or an uptight, leafy suburb. Land use governance should be shifted from the local level to the city, state or national level, where governments seem to be more willing to let cities grow.

“Progressives” want to shift local land use governance to the national level.

Actually it looks like the progressives are buying up condemned property and are getting large government grants (in the name of community development) to fix the places up. They then sell the houses for a profit and are laughing all the way to the bank.

They are doing that but actually that’s not what this editorial is about.

I know. I just felt it needed to be said.

I went to the link and read the whole thing.

I still don’t know what the editorial was about.

Other than leaving ‘it’ to a higher power. (Author’s concluding paragraph).

hep. Chinese crony capitalism.

In order to build a huge marina for billionaires in South of China, they evicted a whole bunch of fisher men, stuffing them in unfinished potemkin condo buildings.

to evict them they used construction workers to throw rocks at the local fisher men with the blessing of the communist rulers, in obvious pogroms.

coming soon to America: Chinese globalism

How dare the owners of a community have control of it...

They’re in the way of the big thinkers and must be cleansed from the land...

It's about illegal immigrants being priced out of cities.

It's about "progressives" wanting the federal government to set zoning rules in cities and local communities making it "more affordable" for their open borders illegals to come and live in this country.

With all due respect you could have saved yourself a lot of time by linking what you have posted to AGENDA 21.

AGENDA 21 is insidious.

Please educate us on FR about AGENDA 21 !

In Washington State, housing shortages were made permanent in the early 90s by passage of laws prohibiting development in previously undeveloped areas. That is progressivism and elitism, masquerading as concern for the environment.

The other half of that is passing laws prohibiting new development in previously undeveloped areas. Thus, all new housing must be shoehorned into existing developed areas. This reduces the building of new single family homes, and increases multi-unit housing in already developed areas. Older homes are torn down and replaced by apartments.

Here in NJ’s depressed cities “community” refers to a large population of blacks and increasingly illegals with nobody to pay for municipal services. The cities want to attract wealthy white childless yuppies (since they bring revenue and don’t burden school systems), but they don’t want them to replace the dependent populations - they want them to simply fund them. The strategy isn’t working because people earning six figures aren’t going to run the gauntlet of panhandlers, muggers, and murderers just to play hipster. Newark NJ’s former mayor Cory Booker wanted to create a “teachers village” in downtown Newark, where “young professionals” (read: whites) could live in a fortified compound (like the “strategic hamlets” of the Vietnam War) close to jobs in the small downtown; it isn’t working because people in NJ have no misconceptions about race relations. We had our “Ferguson” fifty years ago, and trying to lure back the children and grandchildren of the whites who were chased out of Newark half a century ago simply won’t work. We have sanctuary cities because without the illegals the cities would increasingly become ghost towns (as the black birthrate falls and any that succeed flee to whiter pastures), but the illegals contribute nothing while consuming much in terms of services.

Years ago Asbury Park’s revival was all the buzz; planners wanted to create a resort for wealthy homosexuals, and starting building. When the target market realized the poor blacks weren’t being expelled, the plan collapsed; nobody with money was moving there just to live blocks from Hell. They recently demolished the shell of a hotel that had been started years ago; construction had stopped, and for years the frame just sat there (actually, it fit right in with the “Mogadishu motif”, with the boarded-up boardwalk and all). Atlantic City is now facing the same problem; a large welfare population is losing the sugar daddies (the casinos), and somebody needs to be brought in to pay their bills.

In its most basic form, the problem is large populations that contribute nothing to their own upkeep that have no funding for their schools, police protection, and other municipal services. The federal government will give them housing and food; their municipal governments are broke and can provide nothing else.

We have expensive areas with limited housing here in the NYC metro area as well; it seems the solution is to simply pack in illegals in designated areas because the wealthy elites need somebody to cook their food, clean their houses, and care for their children.

I’ve read stories where teachers in Silicon Valley have horrendous commutes because they are forced to live so far from the schools in which they work; the tech millionaires aren’t breeding public servants, and apparently don’t want anything as lowly as a five-figure earner living anywhere near them.

Commissar Bloomberg didn’t even hide his contempt for the “little people”; his desire for “congestion pricing” in lower Manhattan (basically “no little people allowed, even if you can afford the ridiculous tolls to enter my private playground”) was horrible. If he doesn’t want the little people there, then he should pay mercenaries to deal with the Muslims who came and wrecked his playground on 9/11.

There was a news story a few years back here in NJ (I’m about a dozen miles west of NYC) where realtors were involved in some scheme to divert black people elsewhere; for some reason they were steering them away from NJ to Altoona, Pennsylvania. Our black population roughly matches the national population (around 13%); I don’t recall the motive (I don’t think whites were trying to re-settle any of the areas that had fallen 50 years ago). Maybe Asians or Hispanics wanted to set up micro-states; their populations here are swelling. The wealthy county to the north of me just added a third language to their ballots; now they are printed in English, Spanish, and Korean.
