The protocols that were put in place to stop an attacker from taking control of a plane were used against a captain by his co-pilot that resulted in the Germanwings crash in the French Alps, the airline's CEO suggested today.

The CEO of Lufthansa, which owns Germanwings, spoke today about the safeguards in place to separate the cockpit from the rest of the plane, saying that the co-pilot appears to have purposefully locked his colleague out in the minutes leading up to the fatal crash.

Is it only in the US that two people are required to be in the cockpit at all times?

I wonder if the co-pilot suddenly converted and became Amish.

Do U.S. Airlines Require Two People in Cockpit at All Times?

No, but what happened on the Germanwings flight is less likely to happen here.

He’s from Marseilles...FWIW-Lots of Algerians there...

Maybe Mom was Algerian? Just guessing. But the terrorist animals haven’t publicly announced their involvement yet... don’t they usually spout off about their successes?

It’s hard to say.

Yes, it is US policy.

I think it will be European policy now as well.

It may not have prevented this though. An FA in the cockpit might have just been the first victim.

I think it does have a deterrent effect though.

Yes, but I read that Canada just started requiring it, and I suspect a lot of European countries will do likewise.

How did he “rest”...?

They might not announce if they have other copilots flying and waiting for their turn. They may not want to act or announce until the news from this one dies down.

I heard last night that the Cock-Pit canopy had collapsed. This would cause sudden decompression of the Flight Deck. After 9-11 ALL major airlines “fortified” the cock-pit doors. Air Bus has an Auto-Lock system and the Pilot or Co-Pilot must manually open the door. There is an electronic over-ride system code which gives a 30 window to enter. “In case the occupant of the flight deck has become “incapacitated”. Also a counter measure to 9-11. Now, airline security “experts” are questioning if they have made it too difficult to re-enter the Cock-Pit. As I said before. Air Bus has their Scape Goat.

If he has Islamic connections we will never hear about them. Until it is proven not to be Islamic terrorism, it is Islamic terrorism.

Judging from some of the stories I've been reading, that is changing very fast. Several European countries have said they will now require two people in the cockpit at all times.

“For each and every action there is an equal but opposite reaction” simple scientific law. But the cabins in front of commercial craft were hardened to prevent access by hijackers it also made it impossible for any crew members to get in once they are locked on the inside.

Two people in the cockpit rule will last about as long as it takes the airlines to start criping about the extra payroll cost.

What extra payroll costs? If a pilot has to leave the flight deck then a flight attendant stays in place of them. The flight attendant is already on the plane and is getting paid whether she's on the flight deck or in the cabin.

I wonder if the co-pilot suddenly converted and became Amish.

In some news postings there is a picture of the co-pilot sitting with the SF Golden Gate Bridge in the background. If he was depressed, he had a chance to jump off the bridge and end his life. He deliberately chose to end the lives of 150 people who had everything to live for. What kind of evil man does such a thing?

So the answer may well be yes. Evil to the core.

Why I don’t think the copilot was ROP. If he had been, the white house would be saying that we shouldn’t judge a whole class of people for the acts of one, etc etc.
