Asians beware - Top marks largely go to Asians. Bill de Blasio wants to change the exams
The Economist ^ | 14.Mar.2015 | Economist

Posted on 03/24/2015 10:00:53 PM PDT by Cronos

..New York has nine specialised high schools, of which eight admit students using the city’s Specialist High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT). The education they offer rivals that of private schools that charge $40,000 a year. The high schools are free. The most popular, Stuyvesant, sends roughly 25% of its graduates to the Ivy League or other top colleges. The school’s unofficial mantra is “Sleep, study, socialise: pick two.” It admits 4% of test-takers, pickier than Harvard.

New York’s Democratic mayor, Bill de Blasio thinks the SHSAT favours parents who can afford tutors. He wants to “broaden” (ie, relax) the admissions criteria, to help poorer black and Hispanic families.

The SHSAT also faces a legal challenge. The NAACP, the country’s biggest civil-rights legal defence fund, joined others in 2012 to file a suit demanding changes in admissions procedures. New York City’s public schools, the suit claims, are among the most racially segregated in the country

... Asians make up more than 70% of pupils at Stuyvesant; blacks and Hispanics combined make up 3%, and falling. White pupils took 80% of places in 1970; now it is less than 25%.

Pass this article to every Asian-American you know. This is what voting Democrat gives to Asians -- discrimination because they're smart. Democrat -- the party for the dumb

Change the exams? You mean, ask asians questions to which they haven’t memorized the answer? That’s not fair.

The Asians get there through hard work. How dare anyone try to take this away from them—all those years of study and focus and discipline.

Lots of people with their pants in a wad because their kids didn’t get in. This always happens.

I once posted something about how great the prep courses are and how it is a superb investment and a path out of poverty. Now I’m sorry I did. Instead of prompting parents to save up the money and use it for their kids’ future, it has prompted meddling government types to try to eliminate the advantage of the prep course by changing the admissions standards.

Subsidize the good students whose parents would have trouble paying for the course, if you want to. That’s one solution. But don’t change the prep course or the test or the criteria.

de Blasio is doing it wrong. Doesn’t he know what it means to be a Commie? The answer is right under his nose: Just do an exam score redistribution according to race. That’s the ticket!

2 + 2 = redistribution of the wealth of the elite white racists to the oppressed minorities.

The Asians get there through hard work.

Basically, what they do in asia is spend 12 hours a day memorizing the answers to government tests and standardized tests. Americans better think long and hard before saying that this is a model system of education worth emulating.

Change the exams? You mean, ask asians questions to which they haven’t memorized the answer? That’s not fair.

Memorizing answers is also known as studying. Multiplication tables, using slide rules, log tables - all require memorization, personal sacrifice and sheer grit. No one's born with the knowledge of the major players at the Battle of Hastings, the various types of geologic formations, and so on. It has to be read repeatedly and committed to memory. In work settings, employers don't have time for "I'll get back to you, in a while". It's "give me what you've got, now - or find another job". This preparedness and hard core commitment to getting the job done is why the Orient has been charging ahead despite not having been particularly blessed with natural resources.

I don’t think anyone is smarter than anyone else

It’s the hard work you put into it that makes the difference. Practice ,persistence, focus , hard work , discipline beat “genetics” or “intelligence” or “smart” anytime.

What’s the difference between memorizing the answer and knowing the answer? Please. I watch them in Starbux teaching one another stuff. It’s not just rote learning. The tests are well designed to spot real intelligence and understanding.

is why the Orient has

It's why the "orient" has the worst educational system in the world, and thousands of years of history supplying very little evidence to show otherwise.

By the way, aren't you the fellow who says we should not support Christians in the middle east? And yet you want us to support asian causes, right?

It sounds like something anyone could emulate and beat them at. So why hasn't anyone done so? You don't think grit and discipline are worth something? Or are you simply saying the average non-Asian American is too weak to beat them at their own game and must be coddled, via lower test score requirements, in order to be admitted to elite schools?

Your assertions are ludicrous on their face. Elite academic types study their butts off, whatever their ethnicity or race. Jocks are jocks and nerds are nerds. Asians just do a better job than the average non-Asian because they have higher IQ's. If you think Asian Americans are not real Americans and should be systematically discriminated against, that's certainly a respectable point of view - for decades after the Civil Rights Act, it was held to be true by large segments of the US population. The solution is to end Asian immigration and begin to de-naturalize and deport Asians to their country of origin. What is it with this sissy we can't work as hard as these yellow subhumans stuff?

Dedication, hard work, and aptitude is what gets the job done.

These Asian kids have good parents that push the dedication and hard work.

I’m not asian and I was accepted into everyone of those schools in NYC (there were only 4 back then).

There was maybe 50% asian but lots of smart black, white, jewish, and hispanic kids too.

The school was forced to let a very few local neighborhood kids in, who robbed kids of lunch money in the stairway and assaulted teachers until they were booted out.

Of course getting to school without being beaten and robbed by a pack of feral black savages was a neat trick, never happened to me but I saw it happen a lot to other kids.

Somebody ought to take DiBlasio and his commie crew on a helicopter ride over the East River and boot his red communist ass out the door.

Commies destroy EVERYTHING they touch.

Give them no quarter.

Exactly. This isn’t about racism — it’s about nationalism and the imposition of a foreign culture — the brutal, sick Chinese school system — on Americans. Who never voted for it. At American taxpayer expense.

Sure, American kids can get in — if they give up baseball and cheerleading and inner-tubing down the river in July instead of taking on differential equations at 13. Why are we rewarding parents who give up their kids’ childhood?

Somehow, Americans managed to lead the world for almost 250 years without subjecting our kids to this brutal prison-state school regimen. That’s all the evidence you need that this system isn’t needed here.

Why are American kids being punished — no admittance to American public schools — for wanting to live an American life in their own country?

Personal self sacrifice , discipline, hard work are the keys to success

Thomas Edison worked 18 hours per day and he got over 1000 patented inventions in a time when we didn't have the Internet nor Google

Oh. Could you, be assuaged, by bitter choices, you made in the heat of hating yourself? If, only by knowing- you just did not study— much less have a good idea?
