Four men have been charged with the murder of a man who was stabbed at a Coventry nightclub. They are accused of killing Daniel Kirkwood, 18, who had knife wounds to the neck and was found outside the Society Club early on Sunday. Along with Mr Kirkwood, who died in hospital, another 18-year-old man was stabbed in the back and a teenager, 17, was slashed on the arm with a knife. The four charged are due to appear before Coventry magistrates, later.

Apparently only gun violence is bad. All other types, not so much.

The fact is you have a better chance facing someone with a gun & surviving because the person still has to AIM well.

Are there any circumstances under which the deceased would have been legally permitted to carry a handgun on his person for the purpose of self defense?

No chance that will be passed or even considered. The same call came around 2004 and was ignored. Internet myth in the US sadly has it that it was passed.

I have had to correct it on here myself.

It’s 2 meters long and made out of Cuban Iron Wood so it’s very, very hard.

The UK law states that a firearm is for sport/shooting, not self-defence, so essentially no.

BUT, as far as I am aware, this all rests on a 1946 statement by the then Home Secretary, and imo is open to challenge. A grey area. One as far I am aware the 1968, 1988 and 1997 firearms acts didn’t clarify.

In the UK, on the mainland, permits ARE allowed for CC, but have to be allowed on the basis of job or personal security. In Northern Ireland, CC is allowed.

So had this lad been attacked in Belfast or Derry, then yes. On the mainland, one would have to say no.

Of course, any UK mainland person can use their own gun/guns to defend themselves in a self-defence incident in their home or on their land. In public, unless one has the CC permit, in theory, no.

Thanks for the education. It seems to be time for Britons to start pushing the issue.

“Revellers took pics of a teen dying after being knifed in the throat — then posted them on Snapchat.”

Sounds like a scene straight out of Karachi or Kandahar.

“No problem, they can always pass knife control laws...”

If memory serves, China did do that after a series of attacks on elementary schools and train stations by knife-bearing adults.

Perhaps the families of the victims should use knives on the politicians who passed laws and policies that lead to the situation of the victims. If politicians had to wonder if a certain decision they were making might be their last, perhaps they would make more careful decisions. Just saying...

.
Politicians have body guards and other perks to guarantee their safety against those that want to harm them, paid for at our expense.

You don’t.
