TOKYO (AP) — Japan and France signed an arms transfer agreement Friday, paving the way to develop drones and other unmanned equipment together as Japan seeks to play a greater international military role.

In talks on diplomacy and national security, the two countries' foreign and defense ministers reached an agreement aimed at exchanges of defense equipment, services and technology and starting talks on specific projects. The ministers signed the agreement at a joint news conference following the talks.

Is this in violation of the terms of surrender in 45? Not that Obama would do anything if it were and not that I blame the Japanese for recognizing our weakness in abiding by the terms and providing military protection and taking steps to defend themselves.

I remember reading how US troops in Germany did not feel bad about bombing or attacking civilian targets or in engaging in pillaging as they felt the German people allowed this to happen. Whatever it is we are headed toward is not good and I view us as just as culpable as the German citizenry in allowing a nation to trip down this road to chaos during our watch.

They don’t trust Obama to go to bat over the Senkakus, etc.

Israel, but softer spoken and holding chopsticks.

As the war ended in Germany and US troops entered my mother’s hometown of Bachnang, the war weary citizens were treated with kindness and compassion by the GIs. My mother eventually married a soldier and immigrated to the US. She never spoke of the pillaging you described. Her family refused to display the Swastika in their shop window. They also helped their Jewish neighbors as much as they were able to.

I did not know anyone there. My family members fought in the south Pacific.

I simply read this statement in a few books. Capt. Winters (Band Of Brothers) specifically said something like this. I do know it was no contest between surrendering to the Soviets or surrendering to the US, everyone wanted to surrender to the US.

I’m sure some of what the article says is probably true. War hardens many people.

“War hardens many people.”

Well, yes. I do not think that is permission to treat people poorly; still, I think there is some legitimacy in the idea that the German people bore some culpability. This makes me concerned about our/my culpability for what is happening in this country.

The Russians were the rampant pillagers in Germany.

Considering what Germany did to the Russians, I don’t blame them (the Russians) one bit.

Those were the times and we did what we had to do to win this war.

Very true that Germans committed great atrocities against the Russians, including many thousands of civilians. The Germans had it coming, but pillage and rape the Russkies did.

They only did to the Germans a fraction of what Germany did to so many. The Germans instituted a butchery that is unprecedented and allied with Imperial Japan, enabling Japan to develop their military and end up unleashing terror in China and the Southeast Asian nations. Germany did far worse than anything that the Russians ever could. There is no way that twenty million Russians will ever be able to be counted and frankly, as far as I’m concerned, Dresden was more than deserved.

A significant attack on credibility based on something you seem to recall reading. And the connection to the following sentence is unclear.

Japan is frightened. Is has every right to be. Through obscene trade policies, the U.S. is on paper indebted to, and influenced by China. So where does that leave Japan?
