Millionaire in Finland Gets $60,000 Speeding Ticket [But at least they have free healthcare]

In Finland, traffic violation fees are on a “sliding-scale” basis, according to the seriousness of the traffic offense and how much the offender makes.

Which is bad news for rich people with bad driving habits because authorities check your tax returns should you surface on their radar.

Meet businessman Reima Kuisla. The BBC reported poor, or rather rich, Mr. Kuisla was driving 14 mph over the speed limit and was stopped by a police officer. After perusing his 2013 tax return, he was issued a ticket for almost $60,000.

His tax returns revealed he brought in $7.2M in 2013.

But, at least they have universal healthcare.

Mr. Kuisla posted on his Facebook page: “Finland is impossible to live in for certain kinds of people who have high incomes and wealth.”

You know, when I was in high school (1972 graduation) I said that the ticket should be based on your income. But then I thought it through and realized that the cops would target nice cars to boost their city’s income.

It took less than a day for me to figure that out when I was 17. These guys must be really dumb, or socialist. But I repeat myself.

The USA isn’t far behind.

“Means Testing” is common here in the USA too - health-care, education, housing.

The public union employee union bosses where I worked in CA thought this was a great idea, not only for fines, but for property and sales tax. When I asked them about how they proposed to implement the sales tax, they said maybe everyone filing a State income tax return receives a card stating what rate they pay.

Pure insanity! But their reasons is higher wages and benefits including big pensions for the government employee ruling class.

Kinda like Eric Holder would like to see a black man get two years for murder but a white man get death?

(1972 graduation)

Same here, and like you, I could use logic and reason by then.

Their next step will be to make rich people pay for everything on a sliding scale to make it bite equally. Maybe 2k for a couple rolls of toilet paper, 800 bucks for a burger (150 dollars for cheese), 30k for a carton of smokes.

Finnish citations like speeding are based on a percentage of income. That way they are as painful for the rich as they are for poor.

Makes a certain sort of sense.

Switzerland has the option of giving fines like this for repeat offenders.

” After perusing his 2013 tax return, he was issued a ticket for almost $60,000. “

So.... are they required to keep their tax returns in their glove box ?

This makes more sense - if the standard fine isn’t working, give one with a bite.

Switzerland has lots of very rich people and lots of winding mountain roads that aren’t very forgiving of mistakes. It’s not a good idea to let people race Bugattis and Lamborghinis on mountain roads and get off with just a slap on the wrist for traffic violations. Of course in the US, many states can yank a drivers license for having too many moving violations in a 1 or 2 year period.

I am not generally in favor of means testing but there is some logic here. It is supposed to be a punishment (buying a house or a hamburger is not). It is a very inequitable punishment. Give me a $460 fine for running a red light (this happened to me. . . I was according to their ticket 1/10 of 1 second into the red!) hurts me

FAR MORE

than if it happened to my boss. It would be nothing to him. He wouldn’t blink, for me it was devastating.

So the punishment is not equal, and that is what this supposed to be, a punishment.

Still, I don’t have a solution, because as wisely pointed out, they will target better cars for tickets in this case. Or follow millionaires around.
