A majority of House lawmakers now are on record opposing the Obama administrations proposed ban on ammunition commonly used in AR-15 rifles.
A total of 239 lawmakers, including seven Democrats, have signed a letter to Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Director Todd Jones urging the agency to abandon the proposed ammo ban.
Under no circumstances should ATF adopt a standard that will ban ammunition that is overwhelmingly used by law-abiding Americans for legitimate purposes, the lawmakers wrote Wednesday. Among them was Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte, Virginia Republican.
White House press secretary Josh Earnest said this week that President Obama supports the move because he believes a prohibition on armor-piercing bullets will save the lives of law-enforcement officers. The ATF said in a report that newer handguns are capable of firing the ammo, which is primarily used in rifles for target practice or hunting game.
But the lawmakers and others who track Second Amendment issues say the steel-tipped, .223 caliber M855 ammunition has not been used in any fatal shootings of police officers. Opponents are concerned that the proposal is a backdoor effort by the administration to eliminate the use of AR-15 rifles, and many police officers also oppose the ban.
The ATF should refocus its efforts on serious threats to law enforcement officers, the lawmakers wrote. The agency has not even alleged much less offered evidence that even one such round has ever been fired from a handgun at a police officer.

Yet Congress will still roll over and let the king do whatever he wants.
We should have stopped him at the dinner roll.
They could do something worth while and vote to defund the BATF.
A nasty letter will only give them an excuse to feed their voters.
The greatest nation, the greatest people, the free-est of all ... soon to disappear because we ....WE ... are too clouded with politics and social turmoil to see and BELIEVE the war WE ARE IN RIGHT NOW !!!
“Who cares. I got me a phone and a pen.”
Amen...If 0bama pulls this off it’s the camels nose under the tent in limiting ammo.
“A majority of House lawmakers now are on record opposing the Obama administrations proposed ban on ammunition commonly used in AR-15 rifles. “
Well.................................ok?
Then they should speak out; who are “they”...names please.....call your elected ASAP/NOW this must be stopped....it makes no difference if the steel-tipped, .223 caliber M855 ammunition has not been used in any fatal shootings of police officers or not! Tell your elected to put a stop to this over reach NOW.
Sorry guys Obama is the Only Law in the US
My hope is enough legislators are bought off by the NRA.
1) The ATF is attempting to ban M855/SS109 ammunition because it can penetrate Level IIIA soft body armor work by police.
2) Any .223 ammunition will penetrate Level IIIA soft body armor worn by police.
3) Since any .223 ammunition will penetrate police soft body armor, banning M855/SS109 does not increase police safety, but it does reduce the availability of cheap surplus ammunition to sporting shooters.
D’oh! “work” = “worn”
They ‘oppose’ many things.
They ‘do’ nothing.
You can probably find a decent militia near by if you hunt around....
Congress always “urges” from the fetal position.
Cowards and traitors. They are signing the death certificate of the Republic.
Unfortunately, the House has no control over the ATF.
So this is all just posturing for the masses.
So it’s a done deal, then.
obozo orders his agency heads to write law and obozo then funds the implementation of it illegally and yet Congress still thinks they are relevant. They’ve already surrendered our country and yet they do the theatrics of a job just to collect a paycheck and perks.
...and will do absolutely nothing to stop it.
